Water: Snohomish   Date: November 3-8, 2007

Report: Cha cha cha cha CHUM...Fishing has definitely been good on the North Puget Sound Rivers including the Snohomish, Skykomish and Skagit Rivers. Fishing for Silvers (coho) and Chums we have made short work of our limits, getting into them thick before early afternoon. Mainly twitching jigs, casting dick nites and pulling plugs like Kwik Fish K13 and K15 have been the winning ticket!
Stick with the colors that you are confident in and you should get some great results. Concentrate your time on fish that are jumping and surfacing.

Good luck

Very good some days, had to work for them the others. Went outside and got easy limits of Lings and Snapper. The fish have been on the inside for 2 weeks and more coming every day. Water: Green River Date: 1/30/07

Report: I have been fishing the Green River for the last several days.  I knew from local chatter that it was going to be a hunt.  I fished the lower Green (golf course, Soos Creek, etc.) as well as higher in the Metzler, Flaming Geyser area.  I encountered roughly 30 other anglers and not one person hooked in to anything.  I am convinced there are no fish in the Green River.  Trust me......you are wasting your time.

Water: Stillaguamish  Date: 12/17/06

Report: Water was moderately high. The water visibility two to two and half feet. It was almost perfect. The meat hole was not as crowded as I thought it be. Fishing was slow of the approximately forty fishers only about a dozen fish were hooked and four caught before I left at 11;00 AM. I hooked only three fish and lost them all. Slow day. Talked to Bill today (12/26/06), he said only five fish for thirty-five fisher. Where's the steelhead. Its shaping up to be a slow year on the Stilly.

Water:  Sol Duc  Date: 12/15/06

Report: My name is been confused with another fellow fisherman with the same name who feels that my fishing reports are fictitious & about him. Sorry to the other Jeff. H for any confusion on this mistaken identity issue for fishing reports I've submitted. I will not be submitting any more reports after this one because of this matter.   I headed to the Solduc after heavy rains & winds pounded the Forks area. I was accompanied by my brother Leroy & best friend Philippi for a muddy day of fishing. We fished the Nestle Quick like waters all day with possibly one bite. "not sure"   We met a pair of fishermen who showed us some great places to fish for when the waters finally recede. Thanks to those two fishermen. I won't be submitting anymore fishing reports, but i will be reading others & viewing valuable information from this wonderful website. I have done countless hours of researching fishing websites & have found this one to surpass them all. Keep up the great work Bob!  Good fishing to ya all!

Water:  Bogachiel  Date: 12/8/06

Report: My partner and I had a great day on the Bogie. We got our limit of 6 steelhead, 2 biggest fish weigh over 12 lbs. We found them in the fast water using orange/red corkies on a 2-3 foot leader. We lost a lot of tackle so watch for the snags.

Tip: Go light on the lead and a drift fast. This will cut down on the number of snags and still produce a lot of bites.

Note from Bob: That's why many people call it the "Snag Hole" :)

Thanks to: Philippi Pennington

Water:  Satsop  Date: 12/1/06

Editor's Note: We figured as such, but with recent flooding and storytelling galore, we couldn't help ourselves putting them up :)

Water:  Bogachiel  Date: 11/28/06

Report: One of the prettiest sites ever is a river with snow blanketed shorelines flowing next to immense snow flocked trees. The site of this very therapeutic. When i see snow I go steelheading! I usually fish the Bogie when it snows. This river has limited beach access but offers fish to shore anglers. I do very well on this river on average probably because i carry a very large machete. I've always been a brush buster & I cover a lot of river on most of my outings. I use a variety of gear to catch winter steelhead. Pink worms, plugs, spinners, spoons, sand shrimp,& eggs are what i use primarily, but i have found that there are a couple other things that work very well also. Believe it or not small mice cured in shrimp oil & native  western red legged frogs are some of my favorite things to use for catching winter steelhead. Small mice are getting more common to use because of their popularity among several Alaskan fishing guides. That's where I learned of this. I then decided to try mice on Olympic Peninsula rivers. Shrews are my favorite because of their small size. I raise mice & shrews in my garage because of all the steelheading I do. Mice work great for winter & summer steelhead. Your local pet store will do the trick if you don't want to raise them. Buy the small ones. I run a hook through the top of the skull & let the other hang freely near the base of the tail. if hooked correctly one mouse will should stay your hook for about 45 minutes to an hour. When fishing your mouse reel extra fast for two to four feet & then let it drift for 5 to 10 seconds & repeat. You may free float it or use weight depending on current & depth. After a late November snow I invited my two best friends to go fishing at the Bogachiel river. I put the chains on my Ford Pinto & picked up my friends Jim Thompson & Philippi Pennington for some mousing on the Bogie. I always carry first aid, food, rope & emergency blankets when doing this type of fishing in the snow & invite at least two friends for safety. After arriving to a perfect fishable Bogie we all hiked up river. This is my favorite way to fish because steelhead face upstream. This eliminates the chances of spooking fish. Jim was the first to get his mouse into the river & I quickly followed. Philippi proceeded to hike up river to the next hole. Soon Philippi yelled fish on & Jim & I ran up river to view his fish. He landed a 6 pound hatchery brat on a small shrew cured in shrimp oil. I fished this same hole & caught a 6 pound hatchery brat myself. We then hiked to my favorite hole. I hooked on a fresh mouse & caught a 9 pound hatchery hen. What a pretty fish. Later that day Jim lost two fish & I caught one more which was a 8 pound buck. All of our fish were caught on mice. We then hiked downstream towards the Pinto. Suddenly I heard a scream behind me. Jim had fallen through the snow between two logs. Tears ran down  his face as I tried to pull him out from the hole through the logs. He cussed & told me to let go of his hand. I knew this was very serious. I gave him some water & a aspirin from my first aid kit. After several minutes Philippi & I got Jim out from the logs. Philippi took his knife & delicately cut Jim's pant leg from the bottom to the top. As Jim grimaced we noticed his leg was blueish purple around the knee & calve area. I then elevated Jim's leg & laid a safety blanket under him & on top of him. He could not walk & I knew damn well he severely broke his leg. Philippi already cut several alder pecker poles to make a gurney. I used my rope to tie the poles together & we now had a gurney that would make any paramedic proud. Jim cussed us out as we put him on our home made stretcher. I tied all of our fishing rods to the side of the gurney along with several steelhead. Adrenaline helped us make our two mile journey back to the Pinto. I untied our fish & fishing rods from the gurney & then put the fish on the car floor with snow placed on top of them for added freshness. I put the back seat down & we carefully lifted Jim into the car which was now headed to Forks General Hospital. On the way to the hospital Philippi made ice a pack from snow for Jim's leg. I called 911 to let the hospital know we were coming very soon. When we arrived we were greeted by medics at the front door. They did a great job & were very friendly. We soon found out Jim's leg was broken in two places. He spent the two days in the hospital. The poor guy! Lessons to be learned here are that you should never fish a snowy river by yourself, always carry first aid, rope & mice!

Water:  Michigan / Manistee R.  Date: 11/08/06

Report: I miss fishing the Olympic pen rivers, but I'm making do with Mich steelies. Boated 5 for 7 pulling plugs under perfect conditions in the lower Manistee on the 8th, Fish were chrome running 7 to 12 pounds. Hit the surf on lake Mich at Ludington the next day and landed a 6 and 10 pounder on spawn. Also bright with no fin clips - typical natural reproduced wild fish from the PM river.

Water:  Hoh  Date: 10/31/06

Report: It was Halloween morning & my Ford Pinto was warmed & on the road by 3:30 am. My best friend Philippi Pennington was sitting upright in my backseat of my packed car boasting about his most recent trip to the Hoh River. He told me of a king salmon that may of been close to a Hoh river king salmon record that he had lost two weeks before because of a impatient fishing guide. This guide & his clients seemed to intentionally drift over Philippi's line & cost my friend to lose this 55 lb. plus king salmon which may have been a record for the Hoh river. I now know who this guide is & I am waiting to ram his boat when i see him floating the Hoh. I'm just kidding I would really never do that but the thought is somewhat soothing. A 55 LB. king is a huge fish for the Hoh. Anywhere for that matter. I also fished with Philippi long enough to know that he's very conservative when it comes to guessing a fishes weight. I bet that king was closer to sixty lbs. After this story & many more we finally made it to Oxbow campground where we launched Philippi's drift boat. I just about got the Pinto stuck in the mud during the launching process. Our good long time friend Jim Thompson was going to pick us up on the lower river at the end of the day. The river looked really low & clear. I started to fish with a F-7 flat fish & Philippi was using a blue & chrome hot shot. After twenty minutes or so i caught a 5 lb. silver which was a hen full of eggs. She was dark in color. As we floated further down river we saw a small heard of elk crossing the river in a line formation. We drifted further until Bam! Bam! Bam! & Ziiiiiieeeeeeng! A fish was on. Philippi had his rod grasped firmly & his ball cap tilted sideways when jumped to his feet. His game face was on & he looked so happy until suddenly his line & pole went limp. I cussed first & put my lure back into the water. It's so painful to lose fish. I felt that it was now my turn to catch one. Then Philippi yelled "I got'em"! I frantically reeled my line out of the water. This fish was now up river about 100 yards from where we first hooked it. "This must be a king" I exclaimed. After about 30 minutes we saw a huge flash before this mammoth king briefly surfaced. This sucker was every bit of 50 lbs! Twenty minutes later i proudly netted this 51 lb.& 7 ounce chromed king salmon. I hugged Philippi we shouted in joy the rest of the day. We finally made it to very popular gravel bar where our friend  Jim Thompson was waiting to pick us up. Suddenly our joy vanished when Philipi pointed at  a truck parked near ours. It was the unpopular fishing guide who had caused Philippi's missed 55 lb. plus king two weeks before. As Philippi  struggled to grab today's mammoth king from our boat, he told me to grab my camera & follow him. He then walked over to the unpopular guides truck & leaned on the bumper holding his huge king as high as he could. As the guide sat in his truck Philippi grinned to the moon. I took the best picture ever. I will never post this picture because i always give people second chances. Even unpopular fishing guides. Most are great.    Thanks to Jim for picking us up on time this time.. LOL...

Water:  Quillayute  Date: 10/19-22/06

Water:  Dungeness  Date: 10/14/06

Report: This silty small stream can be hit or miss. Weather, timing, color, stealthfulness & perseverance are key to fishing this river. I had none of these while fishing this river today & I got skunked. In utter disgust I drove my Ford Pinto to the Elwa river & caught several salmon on my very first homemade fishing rod. I made this fishing rod from bamboo that came from Morse Creek Valley near Port Angles. It's so gratifying to catch fish on your own craftsmanship in the form of a rod or lure. Today I was blessed with several salmon which were all caught on spoons. Kings & silvers were on the bamboo many times throughout the day. I fished by myself today because it's the cold & flu season already. I hope my good friend & fishing partner Phillipi can shake this horrible bug he caught. I caught a much more powerful bug than Phillipi. It's called the fishing bug. There's no excuses when it comes to fishing. I would like to thank God & myself for tis gratifying day of fishing.

Water:  Little Nestucca  Date: 9/30/06

Report: I was using a spinner and i was bank fishing . One time when i was reeling it in my spinner and gear just stopped so i thought i had a snag so i started to pull back on it and then a chinook salmon jumps out of the water with my spinner on its side, so i had its snagged dangit but i thought it was pretty funny that i thought i had a snag and then i had a fish .

Water:  Hoh  Date: 9/17/06

Report: A little bit of rain made for a slick ride from Port Angles to Forks. But my Ford Pinto prevailed like always. When I arrived at my favorite spot to fish I saw my friend Philippi resting on a log waiting to teach me a few tricks on how to catch summer run steelhead. My goal is to someday catch one of these amazing creatures. Philippi has a sick sense about where to catch summer run steelhead. He grabbed my keys & told me to hop into the pinto. I swear he thought my car was four wheel drive because he drove us for miles through muddy skid roads that were encased by thick trees & brush. After giving me a mild case of whiplash he grinned & told me to get his rope out of his backpack. Without another word he started to walk away leaving me to pack our fishing gear towards the river. I was upset by this & vented my frustrations by threatening that there would be no Pinto rides back to town at the end of the day. Even though I didn't have a clue how to drive back through the maze of skid roads. We finally made it to the river. Philippi tied his rope around my waist & pointed his finger to the other side of the river. I pointed my finger at him vertically & waded across. He grabbed the other end of the rope & made it to my side with ease. We hiked a mile upstream to a log jam with a set of waterfalls. Philippi told me to talk quietly & to walk softly. He made me get on my knees so I wouldn't spook fish. He hooked on a sand shrimp with no weight & launched it into a eddy at the base of the log jam. Suddenly he raised his rod & hooked a steelhead that fought for several minutes giving us many aerial stunts to watch. After a lot of flips & flops he released this six or seven pound fish. We fished this hole a little bit longer & Philippi caught one more fish which was a huge bull trout. We then hiked upstream until we came to what Philippi calls the rock garden. Huge boulders covered this three hundred foot stretch of river. I caught my first summer run steelhead out of this magnificent garden. Philippi caught two more fish here & one of them probably weighed close to twelve pounds. We raced the daylight back towards the Pinto. Wet & hungry we headed to Philippi's truck where we had a snack before heading back to Port Angeles. Thanks to Philippi I can now brag to the boys at Swain's about my first summerun steelhead experience. THANKS PHILIPPI!

Water:  Morse Creek  Date: 9/08/06

Report: Very early in the morning, I drove to the Thompson farm which is located on lower Morse creek. I had finally arrived after a sleepy trip with no coffee. There in my headlights stood Jim Thompson. He was pointing at his compost pile which contained two salmon heads from fish which he caught the day before. He loudly announced  "the silvers are back!" I quickly grabbed my fishing rod & we took a short walk through his farm until we came to a nearly stagnant slow moving hole. This hole was very large in comparison to the rest of this small creek. Jim hooked a silver on his third cast. He pulled one nice fish out of that hole.  He hooked & released several more fish through out the day. For years i have nicknamed him the magician because he catches fish like this every time we go fishing. I hooked nothing like usual until Jim yelled "get'em set the hook jeffry" I jerked my rod like i do at home & watched my fishing line zigzag back & forth in this hole for several minutes. This fish was finally landed after a lot of obscenities & close calls. It was a 12 pound silver. A huge dark buck. What a pretty fish. I haven't had this much fun in years. I owe most of this treasured memory to the magician & man who knew me since i was in diapers. His name is Jim Thompson. Thanks Jim.

Report: Story goes 5 people come out with 10 fish. Lose about 5 to 7 others. Just another good day of fishing at the Calawah River. There is a lot of good sized fish in this river and there is a lot. I would suggest going there if you have a chance.

Water:  Forks Area  Date: 8/1/06

Report: Fished outside the city center of Forks. Intended on staying 2 nights but nailed 2 steelies on a black egg sucking leach the first evening followed by a 10lb steelie the next morning at 9am followed by a 37 inch 18-20 lb King at 10 am in the same hole on a practitioner. Went home to cool the hole for a good friend the next weekend. All fish caught on a 5wt Orvis Clearwater pole 6 wt clear int sink line with 6 lb test. Water was very clear and low. Spooooooky fish to say the least. Had to hide behind weeds and cast 40 ft under trees to get em. Lots of fun, lots of fish left. One out of a hundred will look at the fly. Just fishing for the one anyway. Best fish was lost doing cartwheels up and down the river. To fish where I was takes some work and research and physical stamina to say the least. No I wasn't at the rearing ponds with 50 of my combat friends. A fly fisherman can not compete there. Not sure how to send photos on this site. Will be happy to send when I find out how.

Water:  Columbia River  Date: 6/19/2006

Report: Summer Chinook and Steelhead are being taken in shallow water along the banks of the Columbia, Plunkers are doing very well down river from Kalama to the Megler-Astoria bridge, sturgeon are on the bite in Astoria on the sand flats by the bridge on anchovies. Fin clipped and wild summer salmon can be kept now (June 16) Except for steelhead, only fin clipped. Talked to a lot of people catching steelhead, their always giving me a hunk of fresh bright fish! Bonneville is releasing a lot of water right now which I think which it attributes to the fish traveling in shallow water. Going out Monday by Cathlamet for sturgeon then to the steelhead, salmon grounds.

Report: Fished the Upper Quinalt on 3-24 due to the Hoh and Queets being out. 1 fish on a float/jig and 2 on plugs...rowing across Lake Quinalt to the take-out with wind is tough but was worth it!
On 3-25 we hit the Hoh, starting to come in...7 fish on plugs for the day...didn't miss a take-down, can't rember ever doing that!
3-26 back on the Hoh...water was coming down...Morgan Crossing area (above and below)was great...again lucky 7 fish, all on plugs.
3-27...what we came for...we hit the Queets, water a little high and with some color...tough float/jig fishing water but fishable...put-in at Methany Creek is a little tough due to the road being closed but...a little creativty works well! 11 take-downs, landed 8...1 buck measured over 40".
3-28 back to the Queets...water came down...3 fish on jig/float and 6 on plugs 1 big bright hen almost 40".

The Queets produced again for us this year, couldn't break the 32# monster from last year but blue skies, sunshine and having the Queets to yourself for 2 days...can't beat that! Please handle these special fish with extreme care...they are a treasure!!

Water:  Lyre  Date: 1/22 & 23/2006

Report: Decided quite readily to watch the 'hawks down on the bay with friends and get in some fishing before the game.

The rivers were still looking a bit murky on the way down Saturday, so a friend from there and I decided to hit the sturgeon on the south (N) bay river for a few hours. Both of the known sturgeon rivers have been producing, even during completely blown out conditions lately.

No dice (despite the beautiful weather). Two hours and zip bites. Perfect time to go watch the Seahawks!

Talked to another buddy during the game, Leon, who is a Q.I. and told him I'd be fishing some of the local waters the next day. He asked if I wanted to fish on the rez. "Are you kidding?" I sez. Worth a gasoline fill-up of his car any day.

Planned on fishing Salmon and Cook Crk (I'd never fished on the rez before) but we only fished Salmon cuz of the fishing. Never seen anything like it. There were gangs of steelies holding in the 4-5 drifts below the hatchery. He landed 2 before I was even rigged up (both released) using a straight spin-n-glow. Then he caught 3 more on the next drift down. I was afraid it was reallllly gonna be one of those days.

He must of felt sorry for me after that so he gave 1st crack at the last small piece of nice holding water. Baada-bing for me, a nice-fightin' hen brat that tore up the hole, which I gladly bonked. Walked back up to the previous drift that he caught 3 out of not 20 minutes before. All this time we were spotting fish, and I saw a dandy holding tight to the bank. Cast far enough upstream to get my cheater combo in front of its noggin but the drift stopped well short of my quarry. It felt like a small stick so I began pulling when, wham! It fought fast and stubborn, an unmarked 12lber that I released.

Things slowed a bit so we went to another place where he usually gets fish slightly downstream (there was a guide up by the hatchery so we steered clear).

No dice there so we moved back up near the hatchery. I lost another dandy when it threw the hook, which I attributed to using the same leader the whole time. While I was retying Leon caught a twin of the one I just lost from nearly the same spot, which he decided to bonk as it was getting late.

The final drift right up by the hatchery had steelies holding in plain sight. I was getting the yips by then and missed a couple while he was cleaning his fish. Final hooked one solidly, where it tore about the pool, with several others chasing it! Never seen that before. It ran downstream with me chasing, into a logjam and was gone. By then it was getting late and he was ready to go. A few thoughts:

Its a small area of really good fishing that gets well-hammered throughout the day, but the fish don't seem to mind. If you hire a guide there expect results rather than a pristine experience although it is a fine area to fish when the water is not too low or high.

Maybe next time I can get him to take me to Cook Creek....

Water: Sol Duc, Bogey, Hoh  Date: 12/30-1/1

Report: Plunking on the Sol Duc all day Friday resulted in one fish for 7 rods.  River was high and muddy, so didn't expect much.  Saturday, we tried a few different holes on both the Bogey and Sol Duc and got nothing between the three of us.  Sunday morning I had a nice one till he ran me into the limbs underwater and wrapped me around and broke me off.  Left there and tried plunking on the Hoh for about 5 minutes, till the rain and wind literally blew us off the river.  All in all a pretty crummy fishing trip, but again, we figured with the weather being what it was, that the fishing wasn't going to be too good.  And of course the weather is predicted to me nice for the next few days, now that I have to be here at work.....WHAAAAAA!!!!   FISH-ON!!!

Water: Lower Satsop Date: December 9, 2005

Report: Bank fished the lower Satsop today. Low water made it easy to wade around. Hit 5 fish using eggs. Landed 4, 3 coho and 1 chrome steely. The coho were nice 10-12# hens. Kept the one biggest and brightest coho and the hatch. steely around 8#. I love low water.

Water: Skokomish Date: November 20, 2005

Report: A friend and I fished the Skok Saturday early morning for Coho and hooked 4 landed 3 and more than our share of chums. eggs and a 2/0 owner and size5# split shot 12lb test seemed to work best in tailouts and log jams. a bobber&eggs worked for one fish. a small wisp of green yarn on a size1#hook and drift gear was all we needed for chums it worked killer for the snaggle-tooth rod breakers! use a long leader it helps and doesn't spook fish that easy.

Water: Sol Duc River Date: November 1, 2005

Report: We sure got up early for the best fishing I have ever had. Praise the Lord that my alarm clock got us up & to the river. Fished the Hampton hole & my son Eric caught two chromed silvers about 10 & 16 lbs. I landed a 14 lb. king. We then headed to the Bark hole to meet our friend Brian who was talking to the game warden when we showed up. Brian limited on silvers & watched my son & I catch several fish between 8 & 15 lbs. We released all of them so we could keep fishing. After the Bark hole we fished the Eagle
Island hole up river. My son landed his first king ever which weighed over 25lbs. Best fishing trip ever!

Water: Hoh River  Date: October 24, 2005

Report: We fished the Hoh Monday the 24th with K14 Sardine Wrapped Kwick Fish. We started at the upper put in and fished all the way to Allan's take out. We were 2 for seven with a 21lb. king and a 10lb silver hen. The next day we dropped down to K13s due to clearer water and boated a 26lb. King, a 20 pounder and a 16 pounder with a nice 8 pound chromer buck. We also caught two large dollies which were of course released. The day started out clear but threatening rain. At 2 pm it drizzled and then blew like crazy before rain drove us out. One guide almost got hit by a falling tree. So it pays to keep your eyes on those trees. The silvers were chrome bright and the kings dark silver to dark. I thought the meat might be a bit pale but it was a nice red orange and quite firm. By the way, the drop into Oxbow is in my opinion very hazardous unless you really know your stuff. The upper water is much safer and there were plenty of fish up high.

Water: Queets River  Date: October 4, 2005

Report: We ventured back up to the Salmon & Queets Rivers, the Salmon River was quiet, the Queets however had plenty of fish N it Kings and mostly silvers we took our limits of silvers out of the Queets. The fish started slow, the bite picked up around 11am. Smaller rigs worked the best with green corkie and white tail, and a red orange combo with yellow corkie. The water level was perfect around 1500. Noted several elk N the area as we left out all N all just a fantastic day.

Water: Elwah River  Date: October 1, 2005

Report: Spent the whole morning opening day on the Elwha river and had no luck. Unless you count the flounder I caught with a spinner. Second time that has happened believe it or not. Didn't see a single fish hooked or landed all day. Sunrise until three o'clock. Even after the rain. Nothin'. River is still extremely clear and low. I have seen a lot people fishing in front of the creek at the reservation though. Just you guys know fifty yards up and down from that creek is CLOSED waters.

Water: Salmon River  Date: September 30, 2005

Report: Well the rain finally came, and we waited for this river to show for a while, we've heard good things about this river, the rain came and with it so did the silvers, not sure how long this run will last but the day we fished it, to which we call it the day of 1000 silvers on the Salmon river pod after went thru all day. So if ur N that area u may wanna give this river a look, we only took a few an theRs plenty more, what a sight to behold, that day will long B remembered.

Take care and Good fishing!

Water: Mouth of Toutle River  Date: August 24, 2005

Report: Hit the mouth of Toutle on Wednesday morning with my dad. Just a handful of fishermen with no fish on the bank for early part of morning. My dad crossed over onto the island that has formed at the mouth and hooked a nice steelie on top portion. Five minutes later I hooked a nice buck myself. Couple hours later I landed two smaller typical summer run, so limits for both. Started to fish for early Kings and hooked into what I thought was another steelie...handed the rod to a guy that never caught one before and when he landed it finally, discovered it was a silver....small four pounder at best, but awesome sight to see already...Two days earlier I was fishing same spot and landed my largest steelie ever...34 inches and probably around 12 pounds. Nicest one for me....Did not see any other fish landed that day, Wednesday or Monday....Hit and miss...just a lucky rock I found on Wednesday I guess...also, heads up guys, my car got broken into two Mondays ago...smashed drivers window, all identification taken, everything ... come to find out I was the second one in two days in same spot ... lookin at the glass on the road Wednesday it looks like total of five cars hit now...all in broad daylight by freeway...amazing...take your possessions with you...
good luck...campinguy

Water: Area 10/11  Date: August 23, 2005

Report: I fished the coho today and their are a lot showing from Manchester to Dolphin Point. Whole herring or cut plug alone seem to be the ticket, but the flasher and hoochies work too. 20ft to 40 ft is where we were hitting them. Troll your herring slow and 25 to 30 ft and at least 20 feet back of the ball and when you hook a fish mark where you are and circle till you hook up again. You can do this for hours catching and releasing till you get some nice fish. ours were 6 to 10lbs. Morning seems to be best but the evening bite can be killer. Go get'em they're there.

Water: Lake Washington Locks  Date: Never Apparently

Report: If anyone was wondering about the dwindling possibility of a sockeye season on LW, this hope is lost, their are nets across 3/4 of the locks fish ladder area. whatever happened to the 350000 minimum for an opening for nets and recreational? if we want strong runs in the future we need to allow this seemingly small run go and no one should be allowed to fish, especially considering that this is an introduced species to LW, native fish are one thing but planted fish are a whole 'nother story. this just sucks...

Thanks to: Mikey

Water: Dolphin Point  Date: July 2

Report: A friend and I fished Dolphin Point (Vashon Island) and were hooking kings at the point. Troll from 250ft head towards the beach to 85 ft and back out. Go fast 3 to 5 knots fish deep downriggers at 85 to 120 ft don't worry about the bottom because your downrigger should be at a 45 degree angle and singing .use green spatter back flasher (get this) watermelon apex with the black spots on it and use the factory leader or change it to heavier lb test I use 40lb leader about 4ft should be fine .use some sent if you want. I don't think it matters because it's a reaction strike because your going so fast. Well it worked killer for us, maybe it will for you.

Water: Snohomish  Date: May 11

Report: Today we went out on my neighbors jet sled and fished the Snoqualmie River confluence but nothin'. Then we went down a ways below 522 and hooked up with an 18 pounder pullin' plugs by a rock cliff. Then we got back into the same hole and pulled another one about 15 pounds. It turned out to be a good day except for the rain but that's a part of fishin', you got to learn to deal with it.

Water: Snoqualmie  Date: March 26

Report: OK ... didn't fish. Not sure even when this water opens ... but took my drift boat out for the first time. Really enjoyed this short drift that's close to home. Saw 2 eagles and a bunch of ducks. A few more trial runs and I'll be ready for some bigger water...

Water: Sol Duc, Hoh, & Queets  Date: March 3 - 6

Report: Fished the Hoh 3/4/05 and the river had nice color but really low. Some being caught I heard but none for yours truly.
Took a shot at the Queets 3/5/05, fished from Streaters
ramp all the way down to Hartzell Ramp hitting as much of the bank spots I could and one nice buck 18-20# showed up behind a pink worm! Yahoooo! Seen tons of cat tracks around (made me a little uneasy.) A little slow otherwise as far as fishing goes. Seen the Indians netting pretty heavily lower down by the 101 bridge. (That sucks!)
3/6/05 had to fish the Sol Duc on the way back home, and you might as well be fishing your bath tub, its really clear. Heard of some fish caught in here and luckily one showed up once again for me but this time I was using a 2" pink worm with 8# test. Didn't know they make em' that small did ya! Until next time

Report: NOFISH & I fished bottom end of bar at Tall Timbers for six hours. River was at 30 feet on the gauge and dropping. Clarity was 1-foot. Did not touch a single brat. Water: Sol Duc  Date: November 13, 2004

Report: Went down to the Sol Duc on Saturday and got on the river by 8:30. We fished the first hole by the hatchery. There were lots of fish here. On my friends second cast he hooks a 5lb jack king on a #3 blue vibrax spinner. It was released and we kept fishing. After a while, we headed to another hole by the hatchery. This hole had many fish over 20lbs. And on my friends 3rd or 4th cast he hooks a monster. He fought this fish for over an hour, and then finally it was netted. This was about a 20lb silver. A beast!! We kept this one, and it had a little color but not much. Then a little bit later my friend s dad hooks a 15lb coho and we released it because it was pretty dark. Both of those fish were caught on a #4 and #5 chartreuse vibrax. The fish in the hole were going ballistic, jumping, splashing, and getting some air. Then my friend hooks up with an even bigger fish than before, and it runs for about 50 yards then snaps his line. Probably because the line was weekend from his last fish. I then finally get a fish but it was snagged and was released. The cool thing was that all the fish except for mine were hooked in the mouth. We fished for the rest of the day till dark and had a few hit but no more fish. All in all it was awesome!!!

Water: Humptulips  Date: November 6, 2004

Report: This was my first time fishing the Humptulips River...I recently moved here from Alaska. Lots of fish. Lots of people. I was standing at a hole by my self and had 4 people come down and camp right on top of me...one guy stood six inches from my right! There was lots of room all around! Other people were casting from clear across the river and hooking our lines. I decided after about one minute that I did not go fishing to catch people. Went down stream and caught a good number of silvers and kings and released them (and released them appropriately). Ever since I was a boy fishing my home Alaskan waters I have needed to fish in places other think they can't get into. That's how I find peace and quiet and fish!

Water: Skok  Date: October 9

Report: Fished Skok 10/09/04 a few fish by Pump House & Purdy Creek hole. A few kings still around mostly coho & some chum are showing. Go early & leave early to beat the crowds. Water level should good in a day or two it blew out on me but with a limit of coho it was worth getting soaked. Use long leaders 6ft+ to avoid spooking fish try it.

Water: Hood Canal  Date: August 28

Report: went out to Hood Canal Saturday, scoped the Skok., lots of fish moving in the lower river, river was pretty low and gin clear, fished the upper river for trout with scattered success when we could get away from the salmon. drove north and looked at the Quilcene around noon ... took one look at the people fishing and all the tuna rods traveling with them and began to laugh uncontrollably. went south and fish the upper stretches of the D & D hooking into some beautiful native bows in the teens, and managed to spot some coho summer chum and even a few steelies in the lower stretches while probing for more cuts and bows ... glad they close on the 31st, give those poor chum a break. Awaiting the craziness on the Skok. come Wednesday, just remember stay legal and stay in the water, keep your tackle boxes and nets and trash off the bank!!!

Water: Cowlitz  Date: April 9

Report: It was my day off, so there's no way I was getting up at O'dark-thirty.  More satisfying to have a leisurely breakfast and read the morning paper.  However, the sports section read: "fishing has slowed on the Cowlitz due to fluctuating river flows . . ."  Oh great, ain't no where else to fish today within an hour's drive.  Slow fishing is what I've been having the last few trips, so what's one more?

It was a perfect day for winter steelheading, moderate river height, clear water, and a blue-bird sky, indicating I should have brought some sun screen.  After launching and warming up the boat engine, I tried a nearby pool I haven't fished in a long time.  I was just working out my line, a couple more strips each cast until I had what seemed like an appropriate length for this piece of water.  Naturally I had a hit, since I was completely unsuspecting.  It was on for a couple head shakes, and then when it was supposed to begin running, it was gone.  That's steelheading - easy come, easy go.  Now that I was ready to pay attention, I fished the remainder of the pool without result.

I motored on upriver, getting re-acquainted with some of the channel features that I hadn't experienced at this flow level.  Another spot spoke "holding water," so I pulled over to check it out.  The first pocket was short and kinda' fast for getting the fly deep enough for winter runs and yielded nothing.  The second was deeper, with a slow, lazy feel to it, fed by a brilliant mid-day riffle.  I wasn't sure I could get a drift or swing through it, as I had to stand in a nearly slack-water slough to cast toward the riffle.  It turned out to be accommodating, and the first cast that reached the edge of the riffle was attacked before the fly could sink very far.  That's aggressive, I thought.  It was a steelhead with all the energy a fish could possess, running in several directions and jumping at the end of each run, with the last run nearly beaching itself.  I could see it was fin-clipped, so I let it swim right up onto the beach.  A fresh summer steelhead on April 9.  I guess it's about time to get out the other fly box, the one with my summer steelhead flies.

I fished a couple more pools, but found no more fish.  So it's not like there's a fish behind every rock.  But it was better than I'd expected, based on the fishing report in the newspaper, not that I rely on those anyway.  And it sure was a nice day of winter steelheading, but I was beginning to feel the sun burn on my neck.

Water: Hoh  Date: March 27, 28, 29, 30

Report: Another exceptional spring steelhead adventure! I'm from Pennsylvania and am lucky to travel to the Northwest at the right times of the year...for the past eight years. Spring time means Olympic Coastal Rivers for myself and wife.

Last week was another great week on the beautiful Hoh with the water conditions getting better Sunday through Wed.. The wife smoked me on Sunday. Monday I smoked her with 4 landed chromers. A 15 pound buck kicked my butt and took me for a ride!

Tuesday we tried the Queets although I knew at put-in that the slate colored/high water would be tough. We put-in anyway and after an hour of rain in the face, took off down river to the take out. Drove up to the Hoh for the afternoon and fished Willoughby to Oxbow. While the wife tried desperately to smoke my butt again, I fought back with two beautiful bucks over 40"...back to back...WOW! I can't believe I caught 2 plus twenty bucks within a half mile.

Wed. found us back on the Hoh for the last day of our annual adventure. After sliding the boat in down, over the bank we fished hard down to almost Willoughby creek and found the fish again. Pulling tadpollies and throwing the floats/jigs paid off again with 12 fish hooked, a few nice bucks again but none over 15#'s.

My guide is a long-time friend who speaks very highly of Bob Ball and I intend to schedule a trip or two with Bob to experience his approach!

This web site is wonderful and Bob should be commended for the effort! Let's hook-up in the fall Bob!!!

For you out there wanting to catch a real wild treasure "You can do it"! Just put them back so I have a chance to catch them next year!

Water: Hoh  Date: March 27

Report: JUST BECAUSE THE WATER IS HIGH
DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULDN'T FISH

My partner and I fished the near mouth of the Hoh all day Sat 27. We were the only ones crazy enough to try it. The river was high and dirty. About 5:30-6:00 p.m. I hook a steelhead very close to shore and played it for about 2 minutes before he threw the hook. Next time I will let him eat the shrimp a little longer before setting the hook.

Water: Morse Creek  Date: February 28 and 29

Report: Started out up at the green bridge in Four Seasons park and walked up from there. Hit the first hole which was a really deep, slow stretch. made one cast using metallic red corkie and sand shrimp tail and lost one due to rats nest then I casted again and nailed a hen about 5 pounds. My cousin moved up to where I was fishing , so I moved down to where he was and made one cast and nailed another steelie about 6 pounds and released it due to the adipose fin that didn't seem to go away! Then we moved up to the next two holes which was another slow pool and I moved up to where this guy was fishing before and I made one cast and caught a steelie about 5 pounds (another hen) so I was limited out in about 20 minutes which was awesome. The next day me and my cousin went to the same spot (this was the last day of the season) and didn't hook a thing until we came to this nice ripple then a tailout so he took the tail out and I fished the top of the hole and hooked a metal head about 8 pounds and it was hatchery so kept it . about an hour later, we used the stealth technique and managed to land a buck about 5 pounds. I never seen that many fish caught on Morse creek. We managed to land one more steelie on the bait we had left. ( only had 9 sand shrimp and some store bought eggs and fished for 9 hours)

Water: Dungeness  Date: December 14

Report: I went down to the river in the afternoon. I brought two rods one for plunking and the other for float fishing. I tried plunking for a wile, all I caught was a 5 pound dolly. I walked from the hatchery intake pipes down river. I did not get much. Then i got to a nice long green hole next to the road. I tried a float and eggs, first cast my float ripped under. At the other end of my line was a 7 pound hatchery steelhead. It frayed my 6 pound leader bad. so I sat there tied up anew one. Then I threw on another ball of eggs. Casted it in at the top of the hole then half way through it went under again. I pulled out another hatchery male steelie. I fished a lot longer in that hole with roe and a float. All I caught for the next few hours were Dollys. Then I threw on a pink jig with a pink rubber worm and some shrimp sent. First cast I caught another steelie about 6 pounds. I fished for about another half an hour without a bite, so I decided to put on a Gamakatsu jig purple and pink. After about 30 casts I caught a 9 pound chrome steelie. For the rest of the day I didn't get anything. So I went home. I was really surprised about the hatchery steelhead. I have fished this river for years. You would fish the river for a week solid and get one or two steelies, that were most likely wild. This is going to be a really good year.. So I suggest going to the dungy instead of driving to forks and getting skunked some of the time..

Water: Skykomish and N.F. Sky  Date: December 6

Report: Fished near Reiter Ponds early morning to no avail. Saw three get beached on the highway side that same morning. Went high on the North Fork and tried my luck. Saw a few from one of the upper bridges but could not coax it to biting ANYTHING. On the way home stopped at the highway side of Reiter. Still no luck but watched some guys leaving from the other side with at least four fish. River at Reiter is green and about 3-4 ft visibility, upper river (N.F.) was pretty clear. Maybe I'll try a different approach next time.

Water: Barrier Dam  Date: October 22

Report: A big disappointment is all I can say. My brother-in-law and I drove 2 1/2 hours in hopes of finding some nice late-fall Silvers and maybe a bonus King. What we got was a whole lot of rain and one too many blackened Kings. We were their from 7am till 6pm and caught between us a couple dozen very dark fish each and never seen one Silver caught. All in all we were a day late or two but still had an awesome time catching and releasing one dark fish after another. Still plan on making one more trip down to the mouth of the Toutle in hopes of catching some of them classic cookie cutter big Silvers we have gotten the past few years. Either way, always awesome being down their on the river. By the way, what ever happened to river courtesy? When a guy way up river has a fish on, why the heck don't they yell "Fish coming down" instead of waiting till their fish is quarter mile downriver and hooked in the tail or fin and them strolling down as if its no big deal? I cant even begin to tell you how many times this happened their on Sunday. I know them big Kings got a mind of their own, but come on guys, use common courtesy.
Good fishing to you all...

Water: South Sound / Defiance-Delco / Three Tree

  Date: July 15 -16-22-23-25 -28-29

Report: Have fished many hours, Defiance and Delco are not what they usually are, lots of boats very few fish, Three Tree Pt. has been good this last week, early morning is the key. Boated a #30 and several small kings that we release. saw several nice kings landed this week at Defiance, I think it is starting to pick up...... On the last Friday of July we fished Elliot Bay, near the mouth of Duwamish, in the evening, we did poorly but the fish checker stated he counted 36 kings and 16 silvers that day, he stated the silvers were small and again early morning seems the best. lets hope it picks up, any suggestions by you long time pros, all these areas we have trolled with D- riggers, and Mooched all with cut plug.  Good Luck .......

Water: Sekiu  Date: July 24

Report: Fished 100yds off the Cave. Used small hotshot flashers- one with whole herring, one with green splatter back hootchie glow in dark one with 8 ounces one at 50 feet with D-Rigger. Started at 6am. My buddy Larry hangs a 20 plus king so I reel in and my gear lays on the surface. All of a sudden the water boils next to my flasher and this big thing is just rolling over with my herring. I set the hook and he runs straight out 50 yds. He comes back and then dives to 100 feet, just ripping line. Larry says to me "watch this fish jump out here!" I go, I have my own problems here. We got both fish up to the boat after about 10 minutes but they were both wild and they released easy with the barbless hooks. Then Larry with the hotspot and splatterback squid brings in a high 20s fish which ran and fought furiously out there. Some very sharp and courteous guy stopped his fishing to avoid cutting off Larry's fish. But he was wild and released untouched. We brought a number of silvers to the boat and smaller kings but out of the 15 or so, we only caught one hatchery silver about 3 pounds. The Marina reports 1 in 5 are hatchery fish but I believe it is more like 1 in 10 or worse. Why so many wild fish? Are they "native" or just unclipped by their "native" hatcheries that are selling salmon eggs to the white table cloth Asian restaurant industry? Unclipped hatchery releases would provide a degree of insurance that the fish return or get bagged in their nets. I have helped watched the king return at several hatcheries and noticed that a large number of fish are unclipped upon return. Anyway at 10 to 1 wild over hatchery fish the Sekiu quota of 3500 should last a long time. We had a great day despite no keepers. I mean 15 fish in 3 hours. If these fish are truly native it has to be a good sign that the preservation efforts are working. I was very impressed with the staff at Olson's Marina. Their store is open from 4am to 11pm and they are very friendly and helpful.
So go to Sekiu. Fish shallow in early am and then go deeper after 7am or so. In front of the Marina down East to Slip point is best for silvers. The cave, just around the point west from the Marina is best for Kings. Good bottom fish can be had after the salmon bite is over. Sorry for the editorial about the wild fish but one has to wonder.

Water: Okanogan Co., Conconully Reservoir  Date: 6/20/03 to 6/26/03

Report: My husband and I made our maiden voyage with our first camper to Conconully Reservoir and couldn't have had a better time.  We stayed at Liar's Cove resort (where the people are just incredible). The owners Nita and Arnie were not only friendly but helpful and welcoming.  After our story about the fishing you will understand why it is called Liar's Cove. During our stay we saw at least 10 5lbs or better trout pulled out of the beautiful cool water right off the dock.  I myself hooked into a 5lb 8oz trolling with a crawfish lure. The day we left a little girl caught a 7lb 12oz beauty off the dock (dock fishers were using green or rainbow power bait).  Not only were the big fish there but people were catching there limit of good size 12 inches or better trout everyday.  Everyone we spoke to were return customers and talked about Liar's Cove and the Conconully Reservoir as if they had found a little piece of paradise in Okanogan County, I know we did.  I would definitely recommend this destination.

Water: A galaxy far away Date: 4/15

Report: Went to an unnamed secret spot. Saw two anglers who didn't know one end of a pole from the other. Fished for 4 hours approx. 6:00-10:00. Caught one steelie chrome bright about 8 lbs. walked upstream first cast in a promising hole as it tailed out had a fish try to slam it three times in about 1 ft of water made huge splashes but I missed her. broke off in a tree across the river and retied. Next cast I nailed her, 12 lbs. a little colored spawned out fish. took pictures of both nice natives. Only natives in this river. Very small water so sweet tailouts are easily spotted. I only fished 100 yards of the river. Caught four on the previous trip April 4th, 2 chromers 2 with rosy cheeks 2 were only about 8lbs, one was 12+ and one was a solid 10 pounder. Again, all natives. its not open for steelhead but the best time to catch steelies is the day it opens and the couple weeks that follow the opening for springers. I'm going again this week to try to pick up a couple springers, I doubt I'll see one angler there. I'll post how many fish and what I caught when I get back

Did the upper Bodgy on Sat. hooked one, and lost it.  Did the Clearwater on Sun. Didn't fish much, there was at least 12 boats  on that small river, and it real slow for everyone! Report: Drifted Snoqualmie from Plum's to Raging and Richter's ramps.  Near perfect water, no fish for me or 3 other boats.  A couple dark, spent summer runs being retained by the unknowledgeable. Report: Floated the Wynoochee Sat. and attempted Sun. Sat: From White bridge to Black Creek. River still to high/fast to fish effectively. No bites and talked to a lot of fisherman plus a Warden that said the same. I was hoping this river would be different from the rest of the state but it looks like the statewide hatch. returns are virtually non existent. The Sat. night rains  raised the river even more so we didn't fish Sun.

Water: Green  Date: 1/11

Report: Fished the upper Green below Palmer-Kanasket on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday landed a beautiful 15 lb, 35" hatchery buck with a 17" girth using a small corky and sand shrimp. I also had one other good hit that morning. Sunday fished without any luck. Water was low but now appears to be quite a bit higher. Hopefully it will be good this weekend.

Water: Green  Date: 1/11

Report: Started at Palmer across from the hatchery, but got blown off the water pretty quick. Man, can the wind blow up there. Went down to what we call the "Big Eddy Fredie hole" in the state park. Saw lots of small fish jumping and rolling but nothing on our rods. Has anybody been fishing on the upper Green? If so, please report. I don't know if the fish are late or if this is just a really bad year on the Green.

Water: Green  Date: 1/11

Water: SW Washington Rivers  Date: 1/5/03

Report: I have fished the Grays, Elochoman, Kalama, Naselle and a couple of other little honey holes and gotten one fish all year!!! I throw very good bait into holes that have produced fish for me over the last thirty years. I heard the Cowlitz was supposed to have a good run this year which usually means that the other rivers near there will follow suit to one degree or another. Everywhere is the same story. This has got me pretty worried. What does the future hold?

Water: N. Fork Lewis, Kalama  Date: 1/5/03

Report: What the heck!  I don't know what has happened to our hatchery run.  Fished up and down both rivers this week, haven't seen much going on.  Still quite a few summer run fish (and rednecks who insist they are early winter run) but very few bright fish. Somebody give me a good report ... please!

Water: Everywhere!  Date: 1/2/03

Report: Where are the fish? I have been fishing hard every where, my bud Bill Herzog and I have been talking and we can't figure it out, Tides?? Ocean netting???? I don't get, I mean the hatchery on the Puyallup River plants 150 thousand steelhead, and so far know one has seen a hatchery steelhead on the hole river. Where are the fish?????

Thanks to: Billy

Water: Stilly  Date: 1/1/03

Report: After trying a less productive river I moved to the south fork of the stilly. The Fortson hole was phenomenal. though heavy rains dampened the mood and I actually hooked no fish, within 45 minutes I personally seen at least 6 brought in. The slide hole was also in sweet perfect condition. rain has not effected these holes. people were most productive on small corkies primarily orange and pink backed with roe or shrimp tails. holes should hold out for a few more days if rain persists.

Water: Sky  Date: 1/1/03

Report: Fished the Cracker Bar in sultan from daylight till about 10 am, not a fish caught by myself or other anglers. Spoke to many drift boaters and nothing there either. System is just not producing like usual for this time of year. Best bet is Reiter with jigs and bobber floats, just not a productive system right now. Forced me to find another river for the afternoon. This was the seventh day I fished the system in the past two weeks, the only fish I have seen was at Reiter ponds, and at best I have only seen 3 taken ... not too good.

Water: Pullayup  Date: 12/21

Report: Fished the Puyallup above Sumner with my friend Jim. We were on the river by 8 am, nobody else around.  The river was in great shape with just a little color.  Got us both excited with anticipation of chrome steelhead.  On my third cast, I set the hook only to having the fish come off after a few head shakes.  Jim was still fumbling with his leader, but it didn't take him long to get finished after the missed fish.  The very next cast hooked a chrome chum hen about 6 lbs.  The next hour produced 3 more bright chums.  All hooked in the mouth and released.  Jim finally hooked a chum himself when we decided to move downstream.  We weren't even using green and the chums were aggressively taking our pink corkie/yarn.  After we tried a few more spots unsuccessfully, we came back to the starting point only to find the chums were gone.  No steelie today, but it was fun on my noodle rod.  No competition on the river either.  Wonder where everyone else is fishing?  We headed to see what was happening on the green and found it low/clear.  The only action happening seemed to be chums here also.  Where are the steelhead????

Water: Hump  Date: 12/20

Report: We got on the water early, put the drift boat in at the hatchery. The water still had a little tint of brown but was turning green quick. We fished above the big log and saw two fished hooked from shore. After pulling plugs for an hour or so we decided to drift down to the bluff hole (big mistake, long walk back and no fish). After getting the boat back to the large hole just below the hatchery we finally started seeing some action. I hooked two chrome bright winter Steelhead just above the log and had my first limit day of the year. Saw several fish taken at the mouth of the hatchery, but it was crowded and we didn't want to stand in line for a spot to fish. We tried everything and finally had the best results with a orange cheater with chrome wings. Each fish slammed it.

Water: Sky  Date: 12/18

Report: Fished today, Wednesday 12/18 from 6am to 11am. I saw about a dozen fish caught, 2/3rds bright winter runs. At 8:30 I caught a 5 lb hatchery hen (winter run) on a corky/eggs. As far as I could tell, every other fish was caught by bobber heads. What's up with that?? Seems like hardly anyone is drift fishing Reiter. Next thing you know I'm going to hear someone say to me "Hey, don't you know this is bobber water? Stop drifting gear in this hole!"  :slap:
Seriously, the bobber fishermen did great, lots of fish caught within 10-15 feet of shore which is harder to get a drift through, so they killed them in close and I had the mid to middle of the river to drift myself. Which is OK by me, the fish can't all be in close to shore! But I may just be inclined to pull out some jigs myself next time, especially if I get outfished like that again.
BTW, the river was in sweet condition, a wee bit high but clear and running at more normal levels (I think around 4500 in Sultan, still higher than normal).

Report: A note to WoodDuck. Info. is powerful. So powerful it brings a lot of well conditioned 180# scissorbills that do nothing but screw up the small stream experience for those of us that over the years spent endless days of exploring to find that unique and rewarding experience. If you are a fly guy, the last thing you want is a bait thug low holing you on a small stream stinging up all the fish before you get a chance at em. So lets be smart and use this communication technology wisely. On small streams zipperlip em, and if you wish to share positive info., ALWAYS HOW NEVER WHERE.

Note from Bob: Discussion is good :) However, this will be the last post I place on here regarding this matter. We DO have a bulletin board on the site to share your opinions on this :)

Water: OP  Date: 12/9

Report: A special note to Tom Biggens.  If you are too sensitive to talk about the small waters and their fragile ecosystems, QUIT FISHING THEM.  Do you think we are all eco-thugs out here?  Please!  I am a fly guy, and love the small water.  I tread lightly, and to be honest with you, the the 600lb jerks aren't gonna fish it if they can't take a boat down it.  Information is powerful with fishing, don't be a jerk about it.

Report: This is a plea to those of you who submit fishing reports to this website.  When you report on a productive day of fishing, you advertise that river.  In most cases this is a great service to the fishing community.  My buddies and I have often experienced great outings based on these reports.  However, I ask that all of you report only on major rivers and refrain from submitting reports on the small creeks and minor tributaries found across the Olympic Peninsula.  These are extremely fragile ecosystems that can be easily damaged when over-fished.

Water: Hoh  Date: 11/30

Report: Water was low and the clearest I've ever seen it this time of year.  The weather was blue sky and shirtsleeves.  I could only account for a Dolly Varden/bull trout that must be slurping up drifting chinook eggs.  No steelhead in sight.  That was the story from other anglers I spoke with as well.  Spent the previous day on the Queets, also low now but remaining murky.  All those steelhead from the previous week must have shot up their favorite tributary, as I couldn't find a one.  Low water resulted in many lost flies; time to tie more.

Water: Admiralty Island streams  Date: 9/10-15

Report: Just returned from my guide job at Whaler's Cove Lodge near Angoon.  The last week of my work, the stream fishing for large silvers was fantastic.  Just the sort of thing that everyone wants:  You had to work for them just a little bit.  A good fisherman would have twenty  hook-ups a day using spinners, a good fly fisher would average just a little less.  All the fish are wild, and most of them great leapers and screaming reel runners.  I would usually get a chance too, and averaged four or five fish per day on my "coffee breaks".  The catch was mixed with a few late bright pinks, Dollys, and the somewhat rare cutthroat.  It's great to fish in a wilderness area where you see no one else, not even a strange boot track.  Lots of bears, but not too much of a problem if you fish primarily in the tidewater areas. Good to be home though

Report: Went out to the Skykomish River around 9:00 AM.  Fished the Lewis Street bridge on the boat launch side.  The river was really low and super clear.  Caught a nice steelhead after maybe 2 hours.  The fish pulled the scale at 8 lbs.  A very chrome hen with sea lice.  Hooked the fish with a corky and yarn setup.  I had a hell of a time trying to land the fish because I hooked it right by a log and the fish attempted to wrap my line around it, but I managed to horse him right out the there.  Didn't see anymore fish caught on either side of the river.  Two steelhead for me so far, YEAH!!!!!!

Water: Sol Duc  Date: 11/18

Report: I showed up Friday, I had to see the Solduck blown out. It just seems like it has been forever since I have seen the river in the woods. I fished up above the hatchery at afternoon and released a couple of fish. Sunday was awesome! My wife and I hooked a total of 23 fish! Just casting hardware from shore. My wife finally had her glory day with thirty pound king on 12lb test. She fought another one that I would of liked to have seen, after an hour of tug a war. All the fish bit right at our feet, making it hard to fight at times. My wife was using a cheap dime store lure that nobody reading this forum would ever think about using! I am sure the river is going right back out now.

Report: Silvers were in the lower river.  On Saturday there was a good number where we fished. On Sunday it seemed some had moved up, but there were some left.  It was a typical early morning thing.  Our party of 3 caught 2. We figured we did alright for tourists. At least one local did a lot better on both days.  Fished Vibrax spinners, no. 4 and no. 3. Mostly they were caught on green or orange.  One party at our campground caught 2 silvers out of the Quillayute on the high tide during mid-day on Saturday.

Water: Cowlitz  Date: 8/4-5

Report: We got there Saturday evening and heard there were three nice steelhead taken that afternoon. We glow-balled all night and saw fish rolling and heard them jumping throughout the night another guy left that night with a nice 8-10 pounder. We did hook into a few but didn't get the pleasure of putting them on the shore. All we landed were three 10-14 inch trout; they are back in the river waiting to grow up. We left the river around 8am on Sunday and a couple kids with bicycles (really, at Blue Creek) left with a couple nice steelhead around 7am. There were a couple dozen guys on the river that morning with about 5 sleds and a driftboat. A guy plowed the gravel bar on the other side of the river with his sled about a 1/2 hour before light. He totally damaged his boat and plugged his intake to the point of the boat smoking downriver with no power at all. The water is low and they didn't have a good light on the boat. All in all, it was a great night of fishing with wonderful weather and moonlight.

Water: Wind River Mouth/ Columbia  Date: 4/22

Report: Trolled the Mag Wart in all the " HOT" colors I fished last year that produced. No take-downs! Switched to some nice cured herring on a dropper, "nothing". Wasn't my day. 2 rods out. Saw 6-8 fish taken and 15 fish at ramp. Pretty slow although  there was a bite on, along the buoys. Native Americans just tunin' em up with sport gear in mid-channel. I think fish are just blowin' through to The Dalles.
Note: Stay inside the buoys. I was one of the ones tagged from WDFW fishing outside the buoys 5 ft., due to heavy boaters trolling right along imaginary line between markers. They show no mercy! so, Stay inside. If you're head on with someone make them move!  ha ha  Or reel up they say. Got a report from local 5/2 and still slow.
Just be set up with Mag Warts/ Herring/ and Spinner blade and prawns. Good Luck!

Report: To all the fisherman I've been fishing the west end rivers for 20 plus years. Always hearing about the nets and how many fish they get. But it never really hit home until this week. I've been working in downtown La Push all week right on the water. I couldn't believe what I seen hundreds of steelhead this week this is no stretch of the truth. Giant bins of steelhead all week NATIVES may I add . All for a dollar a pound. 4 an half bins full Wednesday heck of a run . And how many were caught by us not many I'm sure. But I did manage to catch a nice 10lb. buck at Leyenedecker's on the way home and seeing that this fish most be very intelligent seeing he made it through at least 6 nets put in a maze, I released him back to the water. My point of all of this is Approx. 2000 lbs steelhead this week went up the 'Yute. And maybe a handful made it. This makes me sick to my stomach. So please keep practicing catch and release its are only hope for future returns. Bob keep up the good work! on the web your word of catch and release practicing spreads far. Good luck gentleman we're all going to need it.

Water: Nooksak  Date: 3/15

Report: Unfortunately I couldn't get out, had to work, but brother-in-laws dad got out and caught 3 fish 15lb. 16lb. and 19lb. Of course these are estimated weights but being a former cash buyer he is pretty good at estimating the weight of fish. The catch is always a rush but not as much as watching them swim away!!!

Water: Hoko  Date: 3/11

Report: Fishing was tough, I fished the HOKO on the 11th and it took all day to find a fish. I finally was able to entice a small hen approx #5 but just gorgeous, she responded to a tiny piece of shrimp tail with a strand of yarn.

Water: Area 9  Date: 3/11

Report: Fished area 9 from Four Mile Rock to Meadow Point. Caught 2 shakers in 5 hours. Dragged 4" green and blue spatter backs as close to the bottom as we dared. The Cabin is usually closed so I get depth hacks like "it's 180, and the next is ok it's 90 now" Of course by that time we are cranking furiously to keep from dragging our balls around.

Water: Little River, GSMNP, Tenn.  Date: 2/27

Report: Excellent! And here is why! Because 90% of those of us that fish Little River practice Catch & Release. Whether it is individuals or guided clients, you rarely see anyone that keeps a fish. (Occasionally, a person will keep enough to eat. This is usually someone who needs the fish to supplement their family's food resources.) So where the heck is Little River? It is in the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. It is one of the top rated trout streams in the nation and is barely as wide as the Sol Duc and probably carries 1/3 the volume of water. It is fished by hundreds of fishers a week due to it's location in the "most visited National Park in the East." There is one more thing you should know. The Catch & Release policy on Little River is voluntary.
I travel from Tennessee to Forks every year to fish. Please, please, please manage your rivers carefully so I will always have a good reason to return.

Water: Forks Area Rivers  Date: 2/24

Report: Dad and I set out early Saturday morning to do some bank fishing to avoid the boat rush.  We ended up hitting two fish and I beached a beautiful big native hen which was 39+ inches long.  We estimated that she tipped the scales at about 20 pounds.  She put up a great 15 minute fight on my 8lb mainline and leader.  I didn't have the heart to thump such a pretty fish and prevent her from providing us with future generations of steelies so I unpinned her.  It was a great sunny day and we avoided seeing any other fisherman on the water.

Thanks to: Disappointed

Water: Hoh, Queets  Date: 2/23-24

Report: 3 days on the Hoh and one on the Queets yielded a single fish.  We tried it all!  Heck, we even tried out-hardcoring the locals by getting on the river at 0'dark thirty-all to no avail.  The place is beeeautiful but man, do you guys need some rain over there!

Water: Sol Duc  Date: 2/23

Water: HOKO/PHYST  Date: 2/23-24

Report: The rivers again were quite low and clear. Scaled down to #8 main, #6 leader, I was able to get a nice wild hen, about #9lbs, lost another on the PHYST the next day. I have a big problem with the attitude and lack of respect for the wild fish on the Hoko, I was told by a local about 13 nates that were caught on the Hoko. The story is that all fish were kept after a quick fillet job on the river. I found proof of this on the banks the next day. a couple of huge carcasses revealed that not only had someone done a poor hack job on some wild fish but it looked as though a few were quite large and carried the ever so needed genes of this run. So here's the deal you guys watch who you brag about your manly conquest to kill wild fish, cause if I see you practice this behavior in my presence I will kindly take it upon myself to teach you a lesson of respect for one of gods gift to all of us. HOW DARE YOU. I was told that these two guys are locals to this area, I am offering to buy a trip for two on Bob's boat, for anyone who can help me locate these gentlemen. Contact me on the forum on this web site FISHINGFOOL is my name I will check it daily. THANK YOU!

RESPONSE FROM LAZYDRIFTER: I am not saying that I agree with the killing of native fish but the last time I looked the Hoko had no wild fish restrictions. Not putting Bob down because I know that he is believes in c/r. But what is the difference whether these 2 people keeping 13 natives or Joe Blow letting his clients keep 13 native fish in a one week period?

NOTE FROM BOB: Big difference - ethically, I don't like either one, but one is legal, the other isn't!

Water: Fork's Rivers  Date: 2/12-23

Report: Tenth annual trip to Forks. Bank fished on Thursday morning, terribly low conditions. Moved to another stream after noon and spotted a huge pair of steelies under a deep pool. After several minutes of freaking out, back lashes and tree snags, I was able to present a purple Aerofly that was smashed by 40'long, 22' deep buck!!. Fight of a lifetime, on ten lb. test too. Attempted a photo or two and then he was on his way. My buddy also caught his first steelhead ever on the Sol Duc on Friday.

Water: Sky  Date: 2/19

Report: Saukit2em, Brian, and Parker fished from Sultan down to the Lewis St. takeout.  Parker and Saukit2em had had a good previous weekend, while Brian was on a 0-6 losing streak.  The day was sunny and beautiful, while the river was painfully low and clear.  Would this be enough to get rid of Brian's Bad JuJu?

The only action came late in the day when Parker rowed Brian's plug in to a heavy and frisky steelhead!  The massive Sky Toad leaped out of the water and landed back down on the main line.  The line snapped as soon as the fish hit the water and made one big head shake.   Brian is now 0-7 and hopefully hasn't left any of his Bad JuJu in Thor!

Water: Wynoochie  Date: 2/12-13

Report: The Hoko was the only decent chance at finding any fish, due to low/clear conditions as unusual did some bushwhacking to find a few deep pools, and any likely holding water. SCORE...I smacked a chrome 13# hen, 10# buck chrome also. I lost an unknown missile that just kicked my 8lb main/6lbleaders' ass .I don't know if any other fish were caught as i saw no other anglers. both fish were wild and I BONKED my knee while releasing them back to their rightful place. 2/13 I fished hard as heck and drew a blank .. all fish took a #1 gamu with straight eggs.

Water: Snoqualmie  Date: 2/3

Report: Fished the Sno on Saturday and with little pressure. After an hour I hooked a fish and a fellow fisherman that had been fishing a good 100 yards up river from me, drops his rod and made a b-line for me and my fish. The spot I was standing had 2 feet of bank to land this fish on, and this guy is standing only 3 feet from me! Talk about crowding someone! I tried landing it once and he was right in my way. I had to give him an ear full! I myself have many times watched people, but from a distance. Some people need to mind their manners. The fished was a chrome 14# hen. This was the only fish I seen or heard of all day.

Water: Hoko, Physt  Date: 1/13-14

Report:  Both of these rivers were low and mostly clear, I worked the Hoko from the bridge down to the boat launch, and had no luck and saw no fish. I stopped at a hole right off the freeway, on the Physt I was pitching a #3 vibrax, chrome color. On the first cast I saw a flash from behind my lure, a few casts later all hell broke loose. This was my first steelie on a spinner, WOW. I landed a #12 chrome hen, took a photo and let it be wild again, and set her on her way. What a rush.

Thanks to: Tad Dodge

Water: Kalama  Date: 1/13

Report: We fished the upper part of the canyon, down from the dead line.  Water was extremely low and very clear.  It rained all morning and it even snowed.  Almost like winter steelheading.  An encouraging thing was that the silvers are almost gone.  Another encouraging thing was we saw a good number of steelhead moving.  We caught one summer hen of about 10 pounds.  It was a hatchery fish.  When we landed it, we found it had two hooks trailing leaders hanging out of her jaw and another set-up hanging from her tail.  We freed her from all the gear and, figuring that she was a warrior, I released her.  She was, by the way, ripe, her eggs were loose.  Heard other reports of seeing more fish and catching a few more.  Too bad it didn't just keep raining.  It had slacked off by 1 p.m., when we left, and there was no apparent rise in the river or decrease in clarity.

Thanks to: Scott

Water: Sky  Date: 1/10-11

Report: Had the best trip of my steelheadin' career!  Took my wife and brother on their first winter steelhead trip.  Hit the river at sun-up, landed two by 9am, 6 lb & 12 lbs.  Lost another one before my brother landed a 4 lb late summer-run.  Fishing slowed late in the morning, until a little after noon when my wife hooked a slab!  She landed her first steelhead -- a chrome-bright 16.4 lb hen!  And...she was using  8 lb line!  What a fight -- it was taildancin' like crazy, heading up and downstream.  After a good 15 minute battle, she landed it -- the biggest of the day!  Totals for the day were, 9 hooked, 5 landed.  All on bobber & jigs.  What a Christmas present!  Good luck everyone.

Report: The fishing was great the catching was really bad. Spent the morning at Reiter didn't see a single fish. Fished at Start-Up, nothing. Fished bottom of Taylor Hole same result. Talked to a few guys on the river who had seen two fish caught that morning, pretty bad.

Water: Cowlitz  Date: 12/17

Report: They dropped the water again and sounds like it could be awhile before they raise it. The lake is 60 ft. below required amount (power), anyways fishing is slow at best. Few fish caught but not like it was with higher water. 16lbs is leading the Fish Country Derby right now so the big one has yet to be caught. If you are going out to the Cowlitz I recommend you stop by the Fish Country Store and enter the derby which ends Jan 31. No cost. Good place to get tackle.

Report: When it's this low and clear they come in on the tide and hunker in lower end. My friend and I have hit 5 hatchery steelies so far (two on Sunday). Just throwing eggs. I think any tidewater location would work. Rip Lips

Report: Typical story, I took my brother in law steelheading for the first time. We put in at Oxbow, while I was getting the boat ready he made his first cast and had his first steelhead, a chromer about 6#. At first glance the rod was bent and he was reelin' as fast as he could so I really blew off that he had a fish. As he got more excited and no one was paying any attention to him it finaly jumped then I got excited. Just before we got to cottonwood he had number two on, a nice 10# nate, he even opted to release it.
