Knick, it's an "off-base tag" so we can hunt a variety of areas. A good friend of mine that I worked with at my last gig is a licensed NM guide. For 15 years prior he worked in the fall for an outfitter guiding dudes for elk, deer, oryx, and ibex. Kids season is for December, and my buddy had the same tag last year. He shot his bull about an hour from his house, and it didn't take him long to find a decent bull. Hopefully, the kid has a good chance at seeing some critters and gets to throw some lead. We'll stay at my friend's joint. Oh yeah, friend says it's the best N-American game meat he's ever had!
His deer tag will be the challenge as the season is Nov 20-28, which is over a month before the rut. The unit is really big but doesn't have a lot of deer (really known for elk though). BUT...if you see a buck there's a real good chance it could be 200"! The plan is to make one trip; hunt deer, come out, and drive to buddies place. Scout for oryx for a couple of days until the season opens, then...opportunity presents itself...boom-flop. 24-drive home (hopefully naps).
Glad you got bambi tag! Did you shoot an elk last year?
