Here's a couple more hints for those folks interested in fishing the Wind River on foot.

Avoid the weekends (for obvious reasons). It's a real zoo. Weekdays are better but still it's not a place to "commune with the river". It's a meat fishery with lots of folks. But the worst of the lot seems to be there on weekends.

Avoid the canyon. It's steep, a very difficult hike, and the possibility of injury is substantial. Instead, go well above Shepard's Falls. The fish aren't quite as concentrated as they are in the lower canyon but there are still plenty of places to drop a line. Above the village of Stabler is primarily Forest Service land and access is easier. It's still not easy access but it's not the killer hike that you get in the canyon.

Go there in late May/early June. Most of the fish will be thru the fish passage facilities at Shepard's Falls and will be moving upstream above Stabler. Stick to the deep holes. Use bait. Have patience with your fellow anglers. Good luck.
