I made a bracket that held a plugging rod with the butt under the foot brace and the tip over the side even with the front seat. That way it was close enough to grab when it goes down. I made sure the anchor rope was draped over the tackle tray so I could drop the pick while keeping the line tight. The worst part of the 3 ring circus, is that if it's a big fish and it runs downstream you're gonna lose it. The second worst part is trying to net it, because you always end up anchored in faster than desired current.
Start plugging at the top of the hole and work side to side; slip down 3 feet and work side to side; slip down 3 feet.....they'll hit it, even if it's only because it's so doggone annoying and won't go away. I caught - and lost - my first summer run that way. I DON'T reccommend it for summer run....they move past the boat before you can get your hand on the rod!
