When in medical school I had to kill 48 lab mice, which I did on December 22. Left them on the lab table on the 5th floor. Forgot about them until January 3. When I came in the front entrance (1st floor) the smell about knocked me over. It got worse each higher floor. Unforgettable.

Upon arriving one very warm September day at Harlequin Lodge in Yakutat, Alaska the owner (Dean Taylor) asked me to help him cart the fish guts can (55 gallons, about half full) to the garbage truck. Once we got to the truck we had to lift the can up to the hopper, and of course it spilled all over me. Only then did Dean tell me that it had been a week since he had emptied the guts can, and of course the weather all week had been at record high temperatures. I will never, ever forget that smell. Ever.
