You will have to shrink down your photo a lot to be an avatar, a lot smaller size than what you would do for a picture in a post. Then you upload the picture you want to be your avatar to the Visitor Photo Gallery. Go into your PROFILE settings, on this site, and select the URL of the photo you are wanting to make your avatar.
