I have been thinking about this subject for a long while so let me outline my position , FWIW.
I am predisposed to support Israel for exactly the reasons that Aunty outlines. The history of persecution, bias, and genocide is enough to make anyone acknoledge that they have a right to exist and a right to exist in peace.
However.... their current actions, which are literally a War against Lebannon cause my support to waver. Attacking airports, roads, bridges, and Army barracks seems to fulfill the definition of warlike actions. Lebannon, per se, is not an enemy of Israel, yet they are having death and destruction rained on them as though they were. I understand the arguement that this started with Hezbollah taking the 2 soldiers. However, there have been so many actions and reactions from either side I believe the start is buried in history somewhere. Isn't it ironic that a Nation State founded to provide a peaceful haven from worldwide persecution, committs persecution in the name of security? Painting with a wide brush and declaring that Hezbollah is akin to Al Quaeda in our War on Terror is just a talking point. I have not seen any credible evidence that makes them as a threat to us.
Having said all that, I sure the he*l don't know what to do. All I know is that this staunch supporter of Israel finds his conviction wavering.
