Sullie,
From past experience, I'd say you were pretty fortunate to get 2 silvers in so close to the jetty. The rips that yield most of the silvers do come in a bit closer to Slip Pt than off the Caves however. In any case, for best results you probably want to be out 1-3 miles for the best action. I fish a small boat and motor too and often go out to the 2nd & 3rd rips with no difficulty. But if tide, wind or fog are a problem I'll bag it and fish in close and work out to the 1st rip off Slip when I can. Even though it takes longer to get places I haven't found the size of my boat to be that much of a limiting factor in catching fish up there. If your concerned about your boat though, rent a kicker from one of the resorts and use your own motor. The rate is reasonable and those kickers are real safe. And if you get stranded, they'll be more likely to tow you in if it is one of their own boats. Aren't cell phones great.
By the way, that jetty reminds me of a time we caught and released well over a hundred mackerel one day in a El Nino year a while back there. Almost one on every cast & 3-on at a time for hours. Long enough to go back in, rest up and come back out with fly rods and trout gear for more action. The school was immense and they hung off that point and along the kelp for the entire incoming tide. What a blast!
See you up there. I'll be the one with a smaller boat than yours.
