Tulalips building mall near casino

TULALIP (AP) -- The Tulalip Tribes have signed a 75-year lease with a New Jersey company to build a shopping mall on 47 acres north of their new tribal casino at Quil Ceda Village near Marysville.

"This is very important to the tribe," tribal Chairman Herman Williams Jr. told The Herald of Everett on Tuesday. "This is the synergy we have wanted to create to make our casino a success and to make our tribe a success for generations to come."

The mall will be developed and operated by Chelsea Property Group of New Jersey, which operates 60 such shopping malls. It will have 100 to 120 designer and name-brand stores.

The agreement should initially bring the tribal government $1.2 million a year, Williams said. The mall will be called Seattle Premium Outlets. Construction is set to begin this spring and be completed in spring 2005.
