I saw a few guys up on the Russian river on the Kenai Penn. using fly rods with mono. I tried the same thing and youn can cast it fairly well with a little practice. I think this only works on smaller streams. We were basically drift fishing with flyrods. On the Russian it is really easy to get spooled fishing for Sockeye and mono is a lot cheaper than flyline. In fact I reeled in an entire length of flyline that someone had lost.
