That phenomena is not limited to the Cowlitz hatchery fish, but to winter run fish in general in the entire Puget Sound and Georgia Straits watersheds.

I think the best guess right now is that it is due to 1. when they leave the rivers, and 2. where they go when they do...and I believe that at this point there are lots of questions, and not many, if any, answers.

S malma would be the one to give the best answer to that question, so hopefully he'll chime in.
