An 88-year-old man was in intensive care after a goat attacked him for an hour in Madison County, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

Vestal Davis of Colbert was attacked by his neighbor's goat Sunday evening, and as of Wednesday he was in intensive care at Athens Regional Medical Center, according to the report. He complained of pain in his neck and arms before being taken to the hospital, the newspaper reports.

The attack ended only when the goat walked inside the shop, allowing Davis to call 911, according to the paper.

Davis' neighbor told authorities the goat escaped from his pen. The neighbor will be charged with allowing livestock to roam free.

"Mr. Davis stated that he went outside to his shop and looked up, and a goat charged him, knocking him to the ground," the Sheriff's report states. "He stated that every time he moved to get up, the goat would attack him again."

Colbert Mayor Chris Peck told the newspaper the attack was an "unfortunate accident."

"I've never heard of anything like this," he said.
