This latest story got me thinking about two things. First, what parent doesn't teach their kids that certain things are off limits. Some little kids learn not to touch a hot stove by burning their hand, and some kids are persuaded not to touch the hot stove by simple explanation. Either way, they learn. Same with guns.

When I was little there was a list of things in the "don't touch" catagory, so I didn't touch them. Same with my kids when they were real little.

The second thing is what parent would leave a loaded gun where a little kid could access it? I think I always knew where the guns were in my house, but I didn't know where the ammo was until I was taught to shoot. I did roughly the same when my kids were very young. There was no way they could ever get guns and ammo together unsupervised.

I think the problem in all these recent cases is due to a form of bad parenting.
