A 49-year-old Olympia-area woman was critically injured overnight when a gun her son was handling accidentally discharged.
The bullet hit the woman in the head. She was rushed to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and was taken into surgery, Thurston County sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin said.
Sheriff’s investigators describe the shooting as an “unintentional discharge.” The 20-year-old son was interviewed at the scene but has not been arrested.
“There is no reason to believe there was any criminal intent,” Elwin said. “He was appropriately distraught.”
The shooting occurred about 12:15 a.m. in a house in the 5700 block of Kinney Street Southwest.
The mother was sitting on a couch with her sleeping 7-year-old daughter, Elwin said.
The son was handling the .380 semi-automatic handgun nearby when it discharged.
The woman was hit in the head. No one else was injured.
The investigation was continuing.
