I agree that the Kalama as with any of Wa smaller rivers all pose their share of tight spots. The Cowlitz is a good stream to get some experience rowing. If your not sure of whats up ahead get out & walk down stream. & take a look. Follow other boats is also a good way to get down stream. Just make sure to stay back far enough in case that boat takes the wrong route. Also ask other dft. boaters about what to expect. We all started at the same place, looking at a river and shoving off. After 20 yrs of rowing I still follow the above advise and have never had a bad day floating. Search the web there are some dft boat rowing videos out there.
