Another aspect that hasn't been mentioned (or I might have passed over it) may be your rod/reel selection. If you were throwing 8lb leader on an heavy baitcaster, you will break off if not used correctly...

I use a G-Loomis 1264C (10'6") with a Calcutta 200D and 15-20lb P-Line CX depending on time of year and spoon weight. I like a little bit of stretch but I also set the hook like a typical bass fisherman... The long rod is great for upward leverage on the fish and also the crucial parabolic bend to keep the fish pinned.

I also run 1/0 or 2/0 Mustad siwash hooks, best made IMO. All of the above has resulted in many more fish hook ups and landing ration significantly increased to about 75% give or take...
