Got one on my 18' sled.

It's heavy as hell and boat could us less of a gas kicker.
So could my back when I remove it to put on the electric, free drifting motor.

Are there any other quality.....lighter options??

Your Yamaha probably weighs in at a minimum 87# dry weight and if a high thrust bump that up to over 100#.

A 9.8 HP E-Tec is just over 80#.

But if you are willing to drop to a 6 HP Yamaha has their 4-stroke listed at 59# while the E-Tec is listed at 55#.

Pick you poison.

I think the issue with the 6hp yamaha is that it's a 1 cylinder rattler. I'm not aware of any 2 cylinder 4 strokes less than 8hp made any more. Yamaha used to, but i think it was just a detuned t8.

I have the same issue with my boat, a little 14' wooldridge. I have a 75 2 stroke jet and currently use a 2 stroke 15hp yamaha for a kicker(hey, i already had it). It weighs about as much as an 8hp 4 stroke, maybe a little less. I'm considering just going electric for most uses, a 24v setup would probably weigh the same as a gas kicker.

Great excuse to get a bigger boat. "Honey, the kicker is just too big, I need a bigger boat for it"

older 8 horse 2 stroke merc is about as light as you can find that actually works well, if you can find a decent one

Let us know when you plan on using that approach; failure to hear from you after that date will tell all.......

pre '07 Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke. 55lbs. I put an Accumix inline oiler on mine so it's 60lbs total no premixing required. Big low pitch 4 blade.

Do NOT get a single cylinder.

I've got a 6hp Tohatsu that I replaced with an 8hp Yamaha. I'll echo the "don't go single cylinder" (unless you want to buy mine). That Tohatsu ran great and trolled well, it was just soooooooo loud. I couldn't hear my 90hp motor over the sound of the 6hp.

Yamaha 8 HP Long shaft, electric start and power tilt....weight 116.84 pounds.

This motor was bought new, 2006, $2,371.99.

Motor has been perfect. Starts and runs perfect. Quiet, not as quiet as a electric motor. 4 stroke and 2 cylinder.

Power tilt has been worked on 2 times....grrrrrrrr and overall weight could be a problem on some boats....not mine.

Too bad that Yamaha stopped making this motor, I still see many T8's in my area.

My last boat had a T8.
The 9.9's really don't add much weight.
Both great motors.

9.9 weighs about 115 lb. My old trusty Johnson 8 weighed 50 something. If you want light, gonna have to go 2 stroke or get a bigger boat which is always better in every form

Great kicker! I don't remember the weight, but I do remember putting a smidgen over 3000-hours on it!
