Just think if these pound nets were placed below tributaries like the Cowlitz ,Kalama and Lewis.Hell why not the Wynoochee and the Satsop. Sports fishing would be done as we know it. Will these pound nets create a pinch point for sea lions to destroy more of are fisheries. You bet they will sea lions are pretty smart animals.Remember pound nets were outlawed in the late 1930. So remember look at who you support before you spend your're hard earned dollars on out of state special groups.

Laws which made pound nets (fish traps) illegal on the CR were pushed by the gill net fleet for its own benefit. Funny how that happened and that same industrial fleet is complaining about a possible renewal of the pound net.

Now, the issue of how many pound nets, their locations, and the number of hatchery fish to be allowed to pass falls into "the Devil is in the details" category.

Unless the nets completely block the river and are fished 7 days a week 24/7 some level of fish (hatchery and wild) will pass by unhandled. It will be an iterative process to figure how many days to open, how many to close, and so on. There will (should) probably be some allocation between rec and comm. Remember, too, that anything above Bonneville is shared with the Tribes so they have to let hatchery fish by at least some of the time.

I suspect that the ultimate goal of the management will be to achieve, but barely exceed, that hatchery goal. If, say, too many hatchery fish show up when there are extensive rec seasons, then the fish will go to the nets because the fish need to be harvested. The level of hatchery production will fit in with the mix, too.

Larry B: It's not the gill net fleet complaining. It's sportsmen like you and me. I bet if someone was to look into it. They might fined out CCA and WFC were working together. Remember fish politics sometime has strange bed fellows.

The traps and other "set" gear, with the exception of Reef Nets in the San Juans were banned by the efforts of the gillnetters. The recreational anglers probably supported that Initiative, too. It also kept net fishing out of most of Puget Sound (the exception being fishing for Fraser sockeye) until September and requiring they be closed 11/30.
