The forecast for the Kelso/Longview area was for heavy rain the next day or two. Better check again closer to when you're going. It could be blown out.
If it's fishable, just follow the Kalama River Road from I-5. It parallels the river for several miles. There are lots of spots to pull over and fish. Also, check in at Pritchard's store about 3 miles up from I-5 on the left. They'll have the latest information on what's hot and tell you specifically where to go. Any specific information you get now won't do you any good on the 29th, particuarly after a heavy rain. Good luck.

Catcher1--A friend and I fished the Kalama all day yesterday, Thursday. Water was low for winter flow. We had one strike & caught a dime bright winter run hen about 8 pounds. Of about 6 boats we talked with, one had a fish. I'd consider this a very slow day with the amount of pressure on the river. It rained off and on all day and the river is probably on the rise today. I'd also suggest calling Prichards Western Anglers for a river report before heading to the Kalama. I heard the canyon was producing better than the lower river. Good luck! JT

also funny how every time I call the pritchards hotline "the river is in great shape" I think they dub that sentence into every report. :-)

just because someone brags doesn't mean they don't actually follow through with their statements. I brag occasionally, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to catch fish. I'm by no means "the best" there is, but really who is. If you say its you then who's really doing the bragging. Let them brag if they want, it sure is more fun than b*tching about it.

Hey, Stlhdr1, I was a bragging young 25 year old like yourself once. That was a long time ago, something like, oh, last month. I know what you mean about putting the hurt to a lot of steelies as I used to fish, fish, and fish. I have a hell of a lot of steelhead under my belt. Since I went back to college it has put a serious dent in my fishing time. My girlfriend never complains about fishing and rarely keeps me from going. It's the hours and hours of homework that tie me down.
I am a fierce competitor when on the water, but it depends on who is with me. If it's some of my heavy hitter steelhead fishin' buddies, then I am going to outfish them, period. If it's somebody brand new to steelheading or somebody who has not caught many, then I'll work my tail off to get them a fish. Most of the time when I'm pulling plugs I let the guys in the front grab whichever rod gets a takedown. No worries as I will be driftfishin' the next hole and I'll get a chance to hook one for myself. I have a lot of days on the water where I let my guests catch all the fish and hand my rod off when I hook one. Doesn't bother me as long as the recipient is happy and appreciative.
I think it's ok to brag and compete as long as you're in the company of those who can withstand it as they will dish it out too. I am like you, stlhdr1 when it comes to other boats on the river. I don't care who gets in front of me as I have a killer success rate when it comes to batting cleanup. Much like you, there are people out there that have a secret weapon or two.
I would like to challenge you, BK, and any other guys in the mid twenties age group. Let's see what ya'll are made of before we take on the veterans and get creamed. To keep it fair it would have to be the best two out of three: One day on your home river, one day on mine, and one day on a new river that no of us have ever fished. Fair enough? If you win, then "you da man" and vice versa.
I absolutely love fishing with people that can outfish me as I will never know it all and still have so much to learn.

hey BK how about letting a 32 y/o bank fisherman who only gets out 6-10 days a month join you. I fish mainly floats so I can catch the pocket water and snaggy runs for you. I may not have "1000" fish under my belt but I can hold my own.

Hey, BK, how about a little Canadian river fishing coompetition and then we can see who can pick up the hottest babe? I usually go fishing for babes with one friend but I could be talked into bringin' more. We just have to find where they're stacked. Peace

bk are you the guy who lost his anchor in the tail of beginners hole. that was classic but you got you wish. i saw you guys nail 5 or 6 against the rock wall. have you figured out those pumphouse fish. i havent got a chance to fish them yet. someone is always chucking heavy gear or parking a boat on top. sorry about being defensive about beginers hole its just fustrating when your on the bank catching fish and people think there at blue creek and fish over the top of you with heavy gear and spook the fish. but i must admit i like catching more fish of the rock they were on. i swicthed to a bait caster just so i would attract more guys buy a singing coffee grinder.

I was already warned that BK is a helluva good fisherman and I'm sure that stlhdr1 is pretty damn good too. I don't see it as a threat but a good challenge. I am humble enough and tough enough to take a good a$$ whoopin' by you guys if that's what happens. Should be fun and I have already had a flood of e-mails from guys on the board beggin' me to outfish the s**t out of you guys because they think you deserve it. I am not going to take sides as I want to keep this fun and meet some hardcores like you two addicts in the process. I have money to burn but I think we should do it just for bragging rights and the loser can buy the beer at the bar that night if we go out prospecting for honeys.
I am going to float a local river with Mom and Dad for Christmas. That's what I call spending time with the family!!
Happy Holidays Justin

WALT?!? Suprized to find you here. I was just having a good laugh at this and ready to click off and then run into you at the end of it here. hehe. Guess if you chimmed in I will too. ... All these kids that think they've learned it all by their mid-twenties are just about at where you and I were 20 years ago - nobody could touch us so we thought that was really hot sh*t. Only difference is that I was secure enough in myself, even as a chump mid-twenties testosterone OD'd @$$ bandit, that I didn't go around making people wanna puke at a bunch of discusting bragging. Waz up with that?!? And this is only fishing, not something tough like basketball or boxing or science. Now watch their gonads boilover and want to have a boxing match with me . These little boys must have very small weiners or some serious failures to compensate for. . Unfortunate. [This message has been edited by Reel Truth (edited 12-26-2000).]

I came back to re-read my post above and want to appologize for dissin' off so hard. I should have been more supportive of you finding a better way to express yourself. For whatever deep down inside you that compells you to such behavior, I sincerely hope you find a peaceful resolution for it. You will enjoy life so much better and so will those around you. Wheeeeuw! As I read your post Escapee I thought 'oh geez I overdid the preechin and am gettin mocked' . Then I looked up your above post to see that you think about it like me and a lot of others do. ... Your post said "Braggarts have absolutely no class at all!!! It sure is nice to hear from poeple who don't like to constantly blow their own horn! By the way, competetive fishing is for inbred southern rednecks fishing for 4 pound bass with 25 pound line! All of the best fishermen I know don't brag at all, they don't have to". ... They will learn eventually from the 'school of hard knocks' that such blatant bragging, especially in a public forum, is not a becoming or endearing thing to do. I'm sure they are cool guys otherwise? BTW, I think competitve N.W. salmon and steelhead fishing derbies with money involved are illegal unless sanctioned by the WDFG & ODWF. I wouldn't say anything about it to them because it's not a big deal, but it isn't the wisest thing to be advertising about gambling dollars, in a public forum. (Otherwise I wouldn't mind takin their money ... jk jk jk = just kidding!). Just my .02 worth on that.

Keith, I can try to teach you and some other fishermen something right here w/o having to take you out and show you some boating/fishing intracacies. I gave it a poorly worded shot up above (please pardon that - it was a mood thing) so I will try to lend some learned wisdom about fishing that will make you a better fishermen. It took me many years to learn this secret and I will share it with you now (at the risk of sounding condescending or hypocritical - but it is for effect of the point; not to brag). ....
The best fishermen on the river are the ones who truely get the maximun enjoyment from the experience. This can mean different things to different people. One of the common denominators is success at catching fish of course. Another is enjoying the beautiful outdoor scenery. Many enjoy the fun and company of good friends. Relaxing your way into fish is another. ... Now here's the big secret one that I learned in recent years that has pushed my enjoyment level way up; getting over the 'competitive, outfish the rest, prove myself' mentality on the river! ... You see, I was very much like you Keith at your age. Because I learned good uncrowded productive places for bankfishing, and because I was an eggcuring fanatic in addition to other tricks learned, I often caught and released more salmon and steelhead by myself than most guide's boatloads had on a given day. It is a tougher gig having to get doughballs into fish on crowded river sections as guides must do though. I can tell you that being on the river almost every day and being able to dial in on the several different intracacies of what's taking the fish any particular week is a real advantage; for both guides and hardcores like yourself. Like a lot of the rest of us Keith, for a number of reasons I can only fish typically a couple times a week now. That's not enough to really dial in as I used to; or you do now. I still have the occassional double figure days when the fish are in on the day I'm able to go and I make the right educated guesses of where the fish are and what will work best on them that day, but not nearly as often as I used to when I was 'dialed' in and fishing competitively hard almost every day. Yet I have a much better fishing knowledge base now! BUT, I enjoy my time on the river so much more again. Remember how exhilerating it was to go fishing for steelhead the first couple of years, as you caught a few fish in the learning process. Well, with the right attitude and proper appreciation of what you are getting to do out there, fishing can become exhilerating again. And a whole lot more relaxing and satisfying by just fishing for the shere joy of it and not even thinking about 'kicking everyones @$$' or focusing on getting the biggest numbers you can to tell the world about. It took a lot of time and soul searching for me to earn this mindset and shere enjoyment back again. I wouldn't trade it for any amount of big numbers to brag up or tournament trophy's on my desk to show off. The best fishermen find this realm. I hope you do too someday. - RT
