Im probably jumping the gun a little but I am gearing up for springers and foung a great deal on three Ambassadeur 6500c's.
Are these adequate for spring kings or should I stick with the Penn GTI series?
Any others come to mind?

Love my 6000c-6500c Ambassadeurs (the old ones)! Hold plenty of fairly heavy line, good drag, pretty much bullet-proof. I own a couple that have been fished hard for 25-30 years, with nothing except levelwind pawl replacement every 10 years or so.

I have two - use them for most everything and swear by them. The only time one ever let me down was at Rivers Inlet. Hooked into a fish that took off - we saw it flash and new it was very large. It never looked back. I had smoke coming off the spool it was running so hard. Then I got real smart and thought I'd try to thumb it. No more finger print on that digit for quite some time. It took every last inch of line. Then again, the fish in that area run up to as much as 70 lbs. Kinda hard to ask that reel to handle those.....

I've been running two of them on Fenwick Riggersticks since '84. I have had absolutely no problems with them. In fact I caught a 40lb halibut at Hein Bank on one, fishing 20 ft off the bottom for blackmouth. (In the good old days!)

You can fish with them on springers without a doubt. Lets go wet a line sometime.

Godlike-

If it's line capacity you are worried about stop worrying. I use the 5501-C3's for spring chinook and have never came close to running out of line. These reels seem to be a great stand-by. Where do you spring chinook fish? Do you fish from a boat or bank?
