You have a 5 wt. flyrod, with either floating, Type III or Type VI line.

What species do you target? What flies do you use and which line do you use? Is backing necessary?

Yo VooDoo...the type III is a perfect line for fishing alot of the W. Wa. lakes for trout from some sort of floating device...it is useless though in rivers for steelhead and off the shallow beaches for sea-runs...

Just get yourself a floating line (with backing!!) and you will be all set!!...

If you can not or do not want to spend the money on a guide, visit your local flyshop and they will be more then happy to give you direction and lend you a hand!

Right on!! See, i got one of those beginner kits, came with floating line. I'm not to sharp with the casting, but im picking it up. For bait i loooove light action fishing... Is a 5wt. goin to be to heavy for my preferance?

All be it my fishing in Washington Rivers is very dated so I'll with Ryan on his answer. But for summer run fishing in the middle Rogue for half pounders and summer runs in the upper river it's a fairly common rod wt. Most will either be indicator fishing or use a sink tip to get the flys down.

"Down here," 6wt rods are very common for summer run fishing; about the largest spey rod would be either the Sage 6wt or the 7wt for these fish.
