I'm leaving for 6 weeks on Kodiak Island at the end of the month. I have a box full of winter steelhead bugs (marabou's and leeches, mostly) and a few egg patterns (glue eggs and glow bugs). Can any AK vets out there recommend some must-have flies for sockeyes and dollies?

Thanks,
rod

Don't know about sockeye, but I've had my best luck up there using a purple egg sucking leach!

Good luck and make sure you take lots of pictures for us!!

Check out [www.akflyfishers.com] and look in the fly of the month section. The July 2000 one's worked great last year on a south east river. It's amazing to how many people use the floss method up there, with a little research and trial and error on flies these fish will cosistantly willingly move to take flies. They much more fun when you hook them on the inside of there mouth. Good luck up there, 6 weeks! have fun.

The eggs paterns will definately put you into Dollies. You'll want to bring along at least 10-15 dozen with you. It is not uncommon to go through 3-4 dozen a day. Also bring along a couple of fry/smolt patterns too! The migration has probably already started, but the fish will still key in them.

As far as Socks... They seem to be partial to small flies (6-10) especially red flies, but take different colors. A good simple non-destructible fly would be nothing more than a red thread body laquered and a few strands of red Krystal Flash for a wing. Good change up colors would be all black or all pink.

ES Leeches in various colors will work on both species too...
