My dad has recently expressed interest in getting a fly tying vise for tying salmon/steelhead flies and jigs. He has not tied flies before so he isn't committing to buying anything over 100 dollars. Can anyone give any suggestions on brands/models to consider within this price range of reasonable quality. I know it may be a bit of a stretch but he would like to buy something that he won't ever have to replace.

If he is interested in vise that he will never have to replace but he does not want to spend over $100, then I would have him take a look at the Dyna-King Kingfisher.

The Kingfisher comes with the best jaws in the Industry but given that the Kingfisher is a stripped down simplified version of its more expensive brothers it is only $100 (give or take $10). Lifetime warranty included.

Anything cheaper will have to be replaced at one point or another. I would direct him towards the ole standby (Thompson A-Vise)...they were only $40 and held up great but Thompson went out of business this past year so not only are the vises hard to find but warranty work down the road will be more or less impossible to come by.

I could possibly hook you up with a vise. Let me know. No problem in that price range. Sparkey is spot on. Those kingfishers are nice for the price (have that head on my Barracuda).

There is a vendor at the Sportsman Show in Monroe, believe it was Creative Anglers, in the large tent to the right as you come in the main gate. He had some inexpensive vices, $8, $12, $22. Not great quality, but for someone to find out if they really enjoys tying before they invest a ton of money would be a good buy. (I'm still using a $10 vice that is close to 45 years old, works just fine.)

All the D-King vises are top end; less expensive, and a very good vise used my a lot of us 'fly guys' is the HMH products.

Simple, straight forward, built to last .. and last. Mine has seen several hundred fly's go through it from #12's to 2/0's .. and tube flys.

Thompson Model A, or in my case a Model 1 vises are junk today. I bought one about 4 years ago, as it was the standard back when I started fly tying, and I bent the aluminum pin right out of the starting gate. I replaced that pin with a steel pin designed for changing jaws, and that was better. But it still is no where near the vice it was.

I moved up to a Renzetti, and I am glad I did. It is so much better, I can hardly believe it.

A few years (5) ago I bought a vise at the Sportsmans that cost me $40... and it is the best thing I did... it was so good that in the following 3 years, all 5 of my buddies now have bought the same vise.

It can hold very small hooks and big salmon hooks... it rotates, you can open it with one hand, the clamp is removable if you want to place the vise in a hole in your fly tying box or desk...

I forgot to mention that a pedestal vise would suit his purposes better than a clamp seeing as how he doesn't really have a desk to attach a clamp to.
