To the fly fishin bretheren on this site. I have been in the seattle area for just over a year now. I moved from Bozeman Montana where I considered myself a pretty good flyfisherman. Thanks to some friends I immedeatly put down the hardware for a new eight wieght and had a pretty exceptional first season on salmon and I even caught two steelhead on the fly. I have no experience with the upcoming "summer run" salmon and steelhead that are coming for June 1. I need a couple of pointers to get me in the right direction. I am not expecting anyone to give up their zippers but, some directions and techniques would be greatly appreciated. This season I am expecting to really get after it , and a summer start would be nice. Thanks in advance for any advice.

The Sky is close to you and will put out some summer runs and spring chinook, although it will be very crowded. Farther north you have the N. and S Forks of the Stilliguamish. The N. Fork is well known for great flyfishing for steelhead. Also out west to the Olympic Penninsula, you have the Hoh, which is also a great flyfishing river and has many summer runs, as well as the Sol Duc. You can also head way south to the Cowlitz, Kalama, and Lewis for spring chinook and summer runs. And not quite as far south is the Wynoochee wich gets some summer runs.

If you need a quick fix for any fish, the Forks of the Snoqualmie (very close to you) have many small trout and is one of the better trout rivers on the West Side of the state. Try the Middle Fork is fished quite a bit and has many 6-12" cutts and rainbows. The North and South Forks also have fish in them and are less fished.

Summer Runs are a different animal then winter runs, fish tail outs more. Deep pools will hold fish but not like tail outs. Be ready to use sink-tips and dry lines depends on water conditions. Try hitting moveing water 3-4 ft. deep that's been my most preductive water.
