Most of you probably already know .. but Brian is working with one of the best 'spey rod' designer/builders in the world ... R B Meiser rods.
R, as in Robert/Bob, designes his rods, then ships them to a considerable number of folk (even I've gotten the blessings of the Pope of 2-Handers on this one) to 'tell me what's right/wrong!' And Bob will change the rod accordingly.
For 'editorial honesty' I've got to say he handed me 'one rod' at the end of a 'spey clinic' that (in 4 or 5 casts) I had an entire 120 foot spey line plus leader in the air. Told Bob if he dinked with this design I'd have to wring his neck!! The rod is now called the "FES" for Fred Evans Special ... Dear God, if you're going to buy only one spey rod this is it! The rod is not a fishing rod, it's a 'fishing tool.'
But back to the point. Brian has been working with Bob for several months now either rating lines, or "re-designing' lines for his rods. Bob's a first ... he's not calling his rods by line weight, but by 'grain weight.' The idea is that rods are designed to work best within a short range of 'grain weights, not some line designation (spey lines/rods are all over the map, what's on the blank has ZERO to do with anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
Most of Bob's rod's no longer say they're a 6/7, 8/9, what-ever but state a line grain weight. What ever line/configuration you want, but in this range.
To the BrianMeister/Bob MeiserMeister HATS OFF for a job well done!!!! Finally! Someone wants to make sense out of this mess.
