I was wondering if anybody cares about all these numbers that you are throwing out there.

I liked flyfishing when it was a whole lot simpler. But lately with all of this spey stuff it just boggles the mind. Two many different lines, rods, reels. And none of it cheap.

I'm too old to really care one way or the other. As I think that my days of flinging the feathers are just about over. A few more years and I'm about ready to hang it up as the desire is slowly fading away.

Most of you probably already know .. but Brian is working with one of the best 'spey rod' designer/builders in the world ... R B Meiser rods.

R, as in Robert/Bob, designes his rods, then ships them to a considerable number of folk (even I've gotten the blessings of the Pope of 2-Handers on this one) to 'tell me what's right/wrong!' And Bob will change the rod accordingly.

For 'editorial honesty' I've got to say he handed me 'one rod' at the end of a 'spey clinic' that (in 4 or 5 casts) I had an entire 120 foot spey line plus leader in the air. Told Bob if he dinked with this design I'd have to wring his neck!! The rod is now called the "FES" for Fred Evans Special ... Dear God, if you're going to buy only one spey rod this is it! The rod is not a fishing rod, it's a 'fishing tool.'

But back to the point. Brian has been working with Bob for several months now either rating lines, or "re-designing' lines for his rods. Bob's a first ... he's not calling his rods by line weight, but by 'grain weight.' The idea is that rods are designed to work best within a short range of 'grain weights, not some line designation (spey lines/rods are all over the map, what's on the blank has ZERO to do with anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Most of Bob's rod's no longer say they're a 6/7, 8/9, what-ever but state a line grain weight. What ever line/configuration you want, but in this range.

To the BrianMeister/Bob MeiserMeister HATS OFF for a job well done!!!! Finally! Someone wants to make sense out of this mess. laugh hello

I hear you its getting harder to get up early in the morning for the First Light bite. Or I will have to become an afternoon and evening fly fisher. Still think the early morning is best though for trout, salmon, and steelhead.

FL, Jim,

Don't give up on the evening bite. There is something special about sitting next to the river watching the sun slowly sink. Squinting into the falling sun light to see the first moving fish rolling at the tail out. Casting until darkness makes it impossible. Give it a try. There is magic during the sunset.

Line charts! With belly length and grain weight.

That’s where all these charts come into play (and you thought I was blowing smoke up your dress). There are NO standards when it comes to spey line weights. AFTMA Standards for Fly Lines are measure the first 30 ft. But manufacture rate there own way and very few measure the same.

Very few line makers put the grain weight on the box. But most manufactures have it on there web-site; line weights and belly lengths (but in KerryS circumstance you have to ask his wife).

Hardy Mach 1 8/9 weighs in at 324 grains while a Rio Grand 8/9 weighs in at 1100 grains. Looking at these two lines, this shows you why grain weight on rods would make life a lot easier. I think Bob onto something here!

To answer your question, you have to ask question that’s why that shop in Carnation will help you out so much. You can go there and try out all kinds of different lines on rods.

Brian (by the way, why "homer"-2 hander?) is correct. The Spey shop in Carnation is Aaron Reimer ... the rod I was mentioning above that in 4 'swishes' of the rod had all 120 feet in the air.

Aaron got the rod next ... and he had so much power left in his cast that the 'volocity' (sp?) of the line actually pulled backing off the reel!!

Wonderful man, great spey caster, and an even better educator in the world of 2 handed rods. Want 'lessons?;' HE IS your local guy. thumbs
