15 years this week. Couldn't be happier working for the company I am with, has been really cool seeing it grow over the years and the evolution's of the industry. Boss even left me a handle of Buffalo Trace on my desk when I came in. So I have that going for me, which is nice.

1 year & 15 days. So far so good, but it's a client consulting position that ends in December - no matter what. 18 months on and forced 6 months off. So I'm nervous because of Covid + Economy. I won't necessarily be out of a "job" per se with my consulting agency, I'd just need to go to another client during that 6 months. Covid makes everything so much harder. Please wear masks people!
It's been a tough career decade for me for many reasons - some my fault, but most decidedly not. I'm on my 7th stop since 2011. That is sooooo much pain, suffering and expense to endure - that I'm beyond sick of it. In the end, I'll never recover financially for the rest of my career, unless I get extremely lucky and land the really big gig.
But on the bright side, I'm more marketable & have more diverse + deep experience than anyone else in my field, so I have going for me, which is nice.
Great thread War-Paint. Not.

FIFY!
I am just under 2 years. Its a job. Some days suck some days fine. I dont expect to have fun and get paid.
More people need to have that attitude. I'm 45 and entirely sick of the younger "passion and follow my dreams" crowd. Only a very, very few people get to do what they love and make a comfortable living from it. Most of us just need to work for the money and "passion" plays no part in that. Sure, it would be wonderful to do what you love, but it's not readily realistic in today's world. More power to those that are livin' the dream. No hate....go on and get yours!

Current job/company, about 10 months now...current career path, a few months shy of 3 years.
I took a pay cut to take an entry level job in a new career three years ago, and managed to skip right thru all eight or ten years of the standard promotion tracks and go straight to portfolio manager in two years...that's the job I started 10 months ago when I got hired away by the person who encouraged me to take the entry level job at the first company.
Turns out to be a pretty good career move to take that entry level job three years ago, and while I knew I wouldn't take the usual eight or ten years to get to this spot, I didn't figure it would take 23 months, that's for sure.

Six years this month - happens to be the longest stint of my career and twice the money of any other gig and growing. Lead business developer for one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the region. When I started revenue was @ ~$4M with 18 people and now we're @ $70M with 350 people. I've had some great jobs most of which have lasted between 3 - 5 years and working with awesome clients in advertising, marketing and product development both digital and hardware. This current job - which I'll probably ride on into retirement combines all of my past experience while continuing to challenge me to grow my knowledge in consulting my clients. Very rewarding to be able to be on the leading edge of technology and bring solutions to clients that transforms their business. No project or client is the same and I get to work with everyone from back of napkin startups to Fortune 50 tier corporations.
Kudos Todd for the successful career switch - not that easy to pull off!

4 years, 4 months, 2 weeks. But who's counting? I'm retired, and the "job" suits me better than I expected. I did take a significant pay cut, but it hasn't affected my standard of living since all the money I wasn't living on went to taxes or into retirement, insurance, and other stuff. I'm the antithesis of Nick's follow your dream pitch. Not that I followed any dream, but I stumbled my way into a field that I really enjoyed, enough so that it didn't usually feel like work. It wasn't far different from what I would have done (and continue to do) if I didn't have to work for a living.
Less than a month for me. I like it so far. Less stress and I don’t work as hard. Previously I was in my agency for 8 years and promoted up into management for the final year and a half. I likely would have stayed longer but being subjected to a pretty sloppy merge with forced new policies, protocols, and less efficiency did not sound appealing to me. I gave my two cents in what needed to happen to make the merge successful, but it largely fell on deaf ears. My new director had little idea of what it was that I actually did and had no knowledge of one contract. She didn’t know what she didn’t know sort of thing... once I put my notice in they certainly were okay with the door hitting me on the way out and didn’t ask why I was leaving and didn’t seem to care. I got the last laugh since they fumbled on that one contract and took quite a financial hit once I left.
Good thing is I was able to milk working from home for the beginning of the stay at home order before taking two months off for the remainder of the time. Kind of good timing since I got to spend a bunch of time with the little one who stayed home and couldn’t be in pre-school.

33 1/2 years. Add on 1/2 year while I was working as a summer engineering student. Doing 40% telework now. Trying for my high 3 years of pay and retirement coming up soon. I've been filling in a supervisory capacity but missed out on the permanent position to a fishing buddy I've worked with on and off during that time.

12 years at current job; 17 years in same IT career. I like the work most days, but I do wonder from time to time how the hell I'm going to stay engaged for another 18+ years. I will say I feel blessed to have a job that lets me work from home in the present age....
I didn't really like what I was doing, and had started before even getting out of high school, but it paid off.
The early years of composites wasn't fun, but for the last 25 years I've worked from home and on my own schedule.
At times my territory has been just the northwest, and at other times its been global.
I can pretty much travel anywhere in my territory at any time I want without needing an approval.
Everything is paid for and I have a company car.
And for the most part, I really enjoy it, and have no plans of retiring anytime soon.
The problem is there are only a dozen or so jobs just like mine globally, so if you get canned, you may not get another one.
I was able to back out of the global travel last year before the current travel restrictions. I got tired of being gone for a few weeks, then exhausted for days after returning.
I always tried to know more than anyone else, and always make your boss look good.
Plus, find the job that pays the most, with the least amount of responsibilities. Anybody can collect responsibilities in the workplace and not get paid for it.
This requires a certain amount of under performing on purpose to not be promoted to a position with more responsibilities and headaches.

Here's my philosophy about work and the advice I gave to my sons when they asked what to major in.
Choose something you love to do and can make a living at...or, choose something you can tolerate and make a shitton of money at and at 4:30pm you can commence bodacious happiness.

I have been a licensed contractor for 8 years and have been in the trades for 25,my particular trade for almost 20. I like what I do enough when things are good, and want to light [Bleeeeep!] on fire when it's not. I like the freedom it affords me, and I make decent enough money to tell people what to do. Works for me . I'm 47 and if I could retire tomorrow I would. Other than money, work is overrated.

I make just about as much money now in my new job (roughly $.50 an hour less) and don’t have near the responsibilities, headaches or stress. One of the best moves I’ve ever made.

I pretty much retired at 37 years old. Now I just build stuff when I want to, cut my own trees or salvage logs and saw lumber and sell some sometimes, make custom furniture/art. Carve with my chainsaw and get paid for it. Build carports, woodsheds, small houses off grid and stuff like that. When I get tired of something I stop for a while till I want to do it again.
Fished Sekiu yesterday, launched at 4:30, it was on fire till daylight then dead, we landed 3 fish and lost a bunch, biggest was 10 pounds and all were wild. Saw no keepers being netted but lots of fish released.
We were off the water by 8am, guy we brought started chumming and we had to take him in, bite was over anyways. Were gonna fish PA but rough and foggy so we bagged it.

As a guy who was paid to investigate illegal logging and other opperations like illegal building on public and conservation lands throughout the Skagit Basin, I can tell you that this all sounds very illegal.

Like Salmo I have worked at retired for 10 years now. That allowed us (we retired the same day) to travel, garden, take care of sick relatives, and relax. Still do some volunteer/consultation/writing as the spirit moves me. Looking back, I find that the 34 years playing with fish was interesting.
If you remember back to college, you took prerequisites before you got into the meaty courses. I couldn't understand why I took some of the stuff required for my major. But, as I progressed through a career all those threads finally wove themselves into whole cloth. I needed chem and genetics, finally. Never did need calculus, though. Is there some new job in my future where I will need that?

Nothing illegal about it, private property, wood products off of private land. Buildings on private land. You transport Cedar or maple in certain sizes for commercial sale you need a permit, so when you need a permit you purchase one.
Building off grid, well I only do that on property outright owned and for cash, no permits required since they are optional anyways and if you are not dealing with a bank not necessary. How do you get around health codes? Pit toilets are legal and unregulated, most counties have "zoned" them out saying there are no suitable locations for them in their jurisdiction but they don't have jurisdiction over them anyways. Pit toilet is the most environmentally safe method to process human waste and its the cheapest and most simple application. You cant do better than a pit toilet when it comes to the environment, unless you put the pit toilet in a location where the water table rises above the hole, in that case you have an environmental hazard but only when the water rises.
You can do what you want on your own land, you have to invite trouble if you want it.

Truth is human waste is not really dangerous, I mean you don't really want to drink or eat it but generally its not going to hurt you. Society in this country has been conditioned to fear it so it can be used as a tool of control and land management of private property.
Is a hazard placard required when hauling human waste? Nope..
What happens when there is a spill, or someone opens up their holding tank while they drive down the road? It happens more than you think, I have been to that "call" a dozen times or so as a cop. No HAZMAT crew shows up, the cops don't put up hazard tape.. No why? because its not harmful..
UV light kills 97% of the pathogens on contact, the other 3% are purified once they travel through 12 cubic inches of soil. You could literally pour your sewer pipe out into your backyard onto the grass in a 4x4 fenced square, it would stink but it would not be a hazard unless the water table rose above the surface.
Dang....! competition and I thought I would have this one. Nicely done, Bent Rod.
40 years, 3 months, 11 days, 5 hours and 16 minutes as of now, same door of the same building every day, every day...every day.
I figure I have another 5 years or thereabout's in me, but I'll be too young to retire...maybe I join the fishing guide army next, chickenrancher? Gigalo? Moderator?
Hell, maybe I have ten more years, still like work, good at it, making money and the kids these days can't keep up.

Will be 34 years for me in October. My plan original plan was to hang it up in Feb of 2022, so 19 months from now. Boss has been asking what it would take to stick it out longer. That would have to be every Friday off and only go into the office a couple days a week if that. I’m digging this working from home routine and drinking beer with lunch everyday.
If he agrees to that, I’d only be working half the year goes as far as number of days worked when I factor in vacation, sick days, holidays and such. Might be worth it just for the medical insurance until I hit 65. Still up in the air as you can’t buy more time..... SF

You've got more stamina than I to drink a beer at noon. I used to be able to pull that off but no longer...unless it's an ass cold day on the river then the beer doesn't clobber me.
If I manage to retire in the next 3 or 4 years, I will still probably pick up a 3 month contract each year to supplement my 401ks etc.

I found that drinking beer at 6 in the morning was taking it's toll on me,so I just kept drinking round the clock. This Friday it will have been 25 years since I had one of those.

One ice cold beer with a sandwich or whatever I’m having for lunch hits the mark for me. Very refreshing....... I’ve also walked over 350 miles since I’ve been working from home so the carbs aren’t killing my weight . SF

Little shy of two years on my current gig...I like it, and plan on sticking here for a good long while. I manage the Downtown Seattle portfolio for a mid-sized commercial real estate company, including a handful of historic 100+ year old buildings in Pioneer Square and the Central Business District. Sitting in one of them now

heres a hint, shut the fvckin thing and you might get back to your ego stroking attention seeking whore ass post...
or dont, i dont care..
remember what i said...

Nice self-own.
This is my favorite post I have read in while. LOL
What we call a self own, REEVo calls being bullied.
Reminds me of this bitch a$$ in 5th grade. He always felt like everyone was messing with him extra hard but it wasn’t any worse for him than anyone else. His fee fees and whining definitely made it worse; like REEEVo.
For a couple months he went around pantsing the other kids and he thought he was justly doing so, as if the world was against him and embarrassing all the other kids was totally justified. Nobody ever told on him because we were all [Bleeeeep!] with each other but he seemed especially interested in embarrassing people by revealing their genitals because it was the worst thing he could do without physical harm in his mind. Beware of these bitch types and their fee fees, they will go nuclear if they feel justified. This is called moral licensing BTW, and it pretty much is it’s own pandemic nowadays.
Anyway, the kid had pantsed a bunch of us including me, and so I see a perfect moment and pants him in front of a bunch of girls as pay back. First thing this little bitch did was run to the recess lady and the upper offices to tell on me. His mom is soon involved and she wants to sue (she tried to sue or threatened to sue nearly everybody; was that type).
So what happened to me? Absolutely nothing because everyone knew that little kid was a bitch ass on a hell bender using whatever little thing as an excuse to do whatever he wanted. They knew he had pantsed a bunch of kids. Nowadays these types are enabled even more and are even worse; case in point REEVo and his fee fees.
REEVo’s fee fees are clearly powerful and wet like a hurricane and he can’t control them, so he needs to use them as a reason to hate on people.

Yeah, just like we're "jealous of Evo".
Your connection with reality is getting more and more tenuous...you should re-evaluate whether or not sounding more like Evo every day is a good thing.

Thing is...it's not bait. It's Quimber.
I promise that making fun of Quimber being a caricature of who he thinks he is, and making fun of Evo for being a deadbeat and an imbecile, is not "taking the bait", just like pointing out that you sound more and more like Evo every day is not "being owned"...
Don't try to make yourself sound like you're some kind of elite discerning fish that will only rise to a perfectly presented dry fly.
Illahee and Dan and pretty much anyone else that has tossed one out has landed you on some stinky baits enough times that your observation sounds silly.

Dan S.
It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Welcher...........err, Steamer..........is a garbage fish. I've seen pellet head planter trout that are more selective.
Just say something insulting about lardass Trump, and pellethead will swim along in short order to bite.
Then he'll tell you about the free rent he's getting.
lmao
What a fuckin' knob.

Why do Republicans think this country runs on free?
I haven’t met many Republicans that think that. Most that I have encountered believe the role of government should be limited and that spending needs to be addressed. Address spending issues and your need for funding goes down.
It isn’t hard to understand but I’m sure you struggle with it. Let Me know if you need me to give a kiddo explanation of the concept to you.

Maybe in 1970...since then Republicans spend like drunken sailors, pass out unfunded tax cuts like Halloween candy to the rich, and then complain about the deficit every time a Democrat is elected.
Sticking with a job now is different. Lots of competition whether it be for housing or pay, but I'm from the cook, roof, timber and truck driving industry. No college loans and I'm regretting it.
