I fish average 3 sessions a week; 1-3 hours per session. It’s a 10-20 minutes drive for just about every species where I live, no traffic lights the whole way. Fishing isn’t great but it’s still fun. I hooked about 8 dark coho and 3 chum yesterday in a couple hours. None were photo worthy but all kept me sane. I am very grateful to be able to fish like I do and could never live in the city and not have some convenient outdoors and peace and quiet like I do.

My fishing started in those park ponds. Handline, egg hook, and dough. We would get Greens that were 2" long. Graduated to rod and reel, flies, spinners, and such. Went trout fishing with my dad a lot, then, but went about 3-4 years, or so it seemed, between landing a fish. So, it was the sunfish that taught me fishing. Those ponds held some "big" ones too......

Pond fishing is underrated. I get to be a kid again for a couple hours.

I have thought about “garbage fish” a lot over the years and here are my thoughts:

There are ample fishing opportunities just about everywhere except the desert. So why are so many fishermen not interested? I think it’s because we don’t all fish for the same reasons. Here are some of the types of fishermen starting with the type I am:

Fish Nerd: likes all types of fish big and small, ugly and beautiful, likes all the different and sometimes weird fisheries. Willing to just go find out what might live in that pond. A nerd and fish lover at heart

Meat Fisherman: pretty self explanatory, if there is no chance to eat, they aren’t interested. An eater at heart.

Trophy Fisherman: wants big fish and pictures of them for the office wall. A checklister and bragger at heart.

Boat Fisherman: likes their boat, will use it to catch fish but doesn’t fish unless it’s in their boat or at least by boat.

Fly Fisherman: likes romance novels, incense, ascots, wastes their time for their own reasons at their own pace.

Liar Fisherman: these types are the worst, they are more full of BS than anyone. They fish to brag and feel manly, all about ego. They will always one up you. When asked about fishing they will answer with the same question and add 5-10 on top of whatever you say. You can spot them because they will only respond to what you say, but never volunteer any information of their own. Their goal is to be better at fishing and catch more fish than anybody which is an impossible goal, they are eternally unsatisfied.

I used to fish every week when the steelhead or coho were in. Some of my favorite memories are fishing solo and being the first one on the gravel bar and catching a couple steelhats before others got there.

But a series of things happened that put a stop to most of that.

I went ass over teakettle on a muddy bank and broke my shoulder, which took months to heal. So I stopped fishing solo. Add on fewer and shorter seasons and fewer fish, I just lost motivation to get up a o'dark 30.

Now the only time I go is when I can catch a boat ride. Climbing over car sized boulders is a game for the young'ns.

p.s.

Catching ditch pickles ain't bad when they average 3 or 4 lbs with the ocaissional 9 pounder. That's backyard lake fishing in south Florida.

Speaking of ponds.
I took a trip to Puerto Rico with the ex.
It was a business trip for her but I had to attend a bunch of the bs events as the spouse. So I didn’t pack a fishing outfit.
First morning there I take a walk out on the golf course before it opened.
First water hazard I come to I stop and look around and a nice size baby tarpon rolls in front of me. Then another.
FML.... still haven’t caught a tarpon.
To make things worse, there were 100 lbs jumping in the surf off the beach in front of the resort.
I’ll never make that mistake again!

You're still projecting if you think you can categorize the reasons for and appeal of fishing.

It’s no official list. It’s not the end all list.

I posted a half assed list of the types of fisherman which is obviously not serious and obviously impossible to make and you guys pull out the psychology BS? In the next 10 minutes?

This place is getting so stupid lately. Even stupider than before.

You guys deserve Evo because any time someone tries to post something, you just dig it for the worst you can find.

May have to go to Packer and get the nuke. There is no reason to even post here anymore...

I think it’s an interesting topic; the types of fishermen and why we fish. I spent 20 minutes writing that post. I thought it would be a discussion. I guess I underestimated you.
