Demand dropped out when the pandemic hit, and if you remember, the price of a barrel of oil actually dropped to below zero for a while...due to low demand, and high supply.

They shut down supply, and now the economy is opening back up...and demand is going up.

Who has ever seen gas prices go up for the summer driving season? Everyfuckingbody, that's who.

Regarding oil prices; prior to last March, domestic production had been on a positive swing for several years, with the price over $45/barrel (which is over the break-even point for the US Shale industry). Globally, oil consumption was decreasing; most significantly in China starting in late January and February, with all signs pointing to the China Flu.

In late February 2020, the Russians broke stride from their 2016 alliance with Opec. This agreement had both entities agreeing to share in production cuts to control/manipulate the price of oil. BUT, since 2016 (or before, I just know since when I became somewhat versed in the biz) the US Shale Industry was profitable and producing oil domestically, therefore Opec/Russians weren't dictating the US oil market. BUT, China became the #1 oil consumer along about 2016, so those 3 were busy trying to all 3 screw each other.

OK..back to late February. As I mentioned, the Russians wanted more of the market share. Therefore they gambled that by upping production, the global price would drop, making the US Shale Industry non-competitive! Which would work, but it really pissed-off their Opec partners. In early March 2020..Opec and Russia have a Pow-Wow to try to get back on the same team. The Arabs try to rein-in their "comrade" but they don't receive any confirmation from the Russian's that they want to play nice. So...the Arabs take off the gloves, open the valves, and let the juices flow! We didn't see oil production like that in over 30 years! The bottom fell out of the domestic market (and the world too)! By mid/late-March, one day I said on my morning conference call to the office in Colorado, "a bunch of Texas billionaires, woke up millionaires today"! Almost all planned expansion and new infastructure projects were halted for domestic oil production immediately.

The Russian's/Opec succeeded in tripping the breaker on the US Shale Industry, that's for sure! Domestically, Covid didn't have much to do with it, IMO. I just remarked on another thread how diesel has increased over $1 in less than 2 months locally (very close to a 50% increase). It's not summer and Covid hasn't changed that significantly that I'm aware of? I'm not in the petroleum industry anymore so I'm not sure why, but my first thought was the change in the political party?

Maybe my private oil stock will rebound. Went down in value like 50% last year. I tried to sell it back but could only do so in the 1st quarter.

I know right wing talking points and facts don't often go together, but here are a few we can try and fit into the narrative...

First is a shot of oil production in the USA over the last many years...you can see how Obama hated America and only increased production about 100%...then you can see how Trump saved America by increasing it about 75%, at its peak...

The most interesting part is how Sleepy Joe managed to reach all the way back to early 2020 and use his policies to cause production to plummet about 30%...for being so sleep, he's pretty effective, even for a full year before he was elected.



The second shot is retail diesel prices in the US...you can see how Biden managed to cause it to go up in price thru the entire Trump presidency...until, shockingly, early 2020 when the bottom fell out, just like with oil production.



Demand disappeared in Q2 2020, and it's just now coming back...demand goes up, price goes up.

When there is a simple, easy, and obviously correct answer to your question, but you still need to do a bunch of make-up-facts and mental gymnastics to explain your conspiracy theory...well, maybe you're wrong.

What is a degree going to get Sthldr1 that he doesn't already have?

There's something to be said for having a good chunk of common sense, a willingness to work and the yearning to keep on learning. I have spent countless hours getting to know Stlhdr1 and will vouch that he does indeed have a lot of common sense, is smart, a hard worker, and never stops learning.

A higher education degree doesn't guarantee anyone anything, nor is it a fix-all to how one measures success or one's education level.

I believe one our America's downfall is this imaginary belief that you will not succeed in America without a higher education degree. I truly wish America would invest in the trades and trade schools as a legitimate option for kids graduating high school.

If it's just a straight investment, he would be smart to invest in a 509B, or the GET program so that his daughter will have the financial opportunity to go to a higher education if she is able and willing to do so.

Better served? As none of us know the market, that may or may not be a true statement.

what lack of education will get you.
Two things one learns in college.
First to shows you how fvcked up the world is, and what little you can do about it.
The second is it teaches you difference between your ass and a hole in the ground.

There are educated and uneducated individuals on both sides of the aisle. There are educated people who lack common sense. There are people with common sense who lack education. There are also people who lack both. It isn't limited to a political affiliation.

One of my biggest takeaways from college was knowing that I don't know everything, but also that nobody else also knows everything. Professors were frequently wrong about many things that were taught which could often be found with a quick search in the data bases yielding research to the contrary. I also learned how easily research could be manipulated to yield a different result for an agenda or certain benefit. I learned about corruption, and how deep it runs in this country. Neither side is exempt to this and it is abundantly clear.

I also learned that had I went the route of a trade instead of college I would make as much money or possibly more than I do now and have no student loans. I would encourage you to read more, especially if you think that Republicans cannot be smart or educated or if you believe that higher education is the only way one can become successful or educated.

Some say that success is measured by happiness. Maybe not a perfect yardstick since some of the dumbest people are the happiest people. I guess that kinda' shoots down the happiness yardstick.

A potentially useful yardstick is the financial well being to live safe and comfortably, not lacking material needs. Maybe that along with the intellectual capacity to know what you need and what you want and the skills and ability to acquire both. And also important is being smart enough so that other smart people don't think you're dumber than a box of rocks.

You are exactly right, Salmo g. It boils down to how you define success. For myself, success is defined by happiness and ease of life. What is happiness and ease of life? Happiness is being able to wake up every day with a smile on my face and having meaning and purpose to my life. My family and my career contribute to this.

What is ease of life? Do I have to work constantly? Do I have enough money to keep the bill collectors at bay and have plenty left over to enjoy my life without the stress of finances? Do I have good self-awareness and interpersonal skills to connect well with others? Do I have my life structured in such a way that I do not feel overwhelmed? Do I have adequate skills to navigate and overcome challenges when they do surface?

A variety of combinations can lead to having all these things.
