I'm thinking about taking off early sometime this week from work in Auburn and going out after sea runs. I've never even attempted to go after them before, so if you want a good show, feel free to tag along smile

Anyways, will my Sage 5wt work? Should I just use a floating line? What kind of flies should I be looking at using for them? Any areas that you guys have had a lot of luck in?

Thanks all! smile

5wt is fine, I fish shallow along shore lines (Less than 10 feet), floating line with clousers, shrimp, sculpin, or any other baitfish pattern usually works. I have only fished for them in Hood Canal so anywhere else I wouldn't know. Just find a little current along a point, oyster beds, small steep drop offs along the shore and you should be OK.

I have heard that a reverse spider pattern works well. Let us know how you do. Glenn

anything small and flashy, clousers, sculpin patterns, buggers... doesnt really matter if the fish are around.
I like points with good gravel and current. Preferably with eel grass beds on either side.

mreynolds, can you please post a photo and tying instructions for the conehead squid? I use a lot of squid patterns for Coho in the salt and am intrigued by your pattern.
One pattern that I have been using a lot lately is the Jim Dandy (aka Snot Dart). It is a gold cone head, cream marabou tail, orange floss body with gold rib and a dubbed orange, red and yellow collar behind the gold cone. It really produces some great strikes. The fly was designed by Jim Kerr of the Port Townsend Angler and there is a picture of the fly in their catalog on the website.
I have to agree with David, if the fish are around they will slam almost any fly that looks like food. If you aren't getting hits or follows, find a new spot to fish. These are nomadic fish and they move around a lot.
Good fishing, Steve
