Just saw this on the Moldy Chum blog.

Apparently this video has the Addicted Fishing guys catching pink after pink in the Dosewallips River, which is closed to salmon fishing during the summer. I assume to protect the ESA summer chum.

https://www.moldychum.com/targeting-pinks-in-the-dosewallips-is-unlawful/

Here is the video, which anyone that has fished the Dosewallips, can tell exactly where they are fishing.

https://youtu.be/t0TwU4k-gUs

"According to the crew at Addicted Fishing, this might be the best video they’ve ever made. Well, they might want to rethink that description.

The unnamed “NEW” creek in this video is the Dosewallips, which flows into Hood Canal and is closed to all salmon fishing. Anyone who fishes the Dosie for trout is familiar with the highlighted stretch of river from the campground up to and beyond the powerlines.

Bad enough being a Washington-based fishing media company and not checking the regs, even worse documenting and sharing 18+ wildlife violations with your 229K subscribers and wildlife officials."

They don’t identify where they are fishing in the video.
Surprised it is open for fishing with how the mid hood canal Chinook shut down area 11 for most of the year by just a couple strays.
But if it’s open to fishing, it should be open to pinks with those type of numbers. Only thing they got wrong was when someone told them it was open to hatchery coho. Don’t see any actual violations.

I guess that's fair, but why did they take the video down then? Addicted would never pull a video with 40k+ views and what they call their best video yet.

Video is now a dead link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0TwU4k-gUs

Just saying...

I guess if one is OK with illegal fishing, then it doesn't matter. You're right.

But given the higher profile of these guides or crew or whatever they are, I hope enforcement gives them tickets and makes an example out of them.

Who knows? Maybe they'll surprise us all and publicly apologize or something. But not holding my breath.

I was referring to your obsession with them.
Can't recall ever wanting to watch their videos let alone making a post about them.

odd how i made a comment on the video about the river not open to salmon fishing until Nov 1st and they deleted the video...

Martin, Jordan, Valerie and all the other morons from that place are only in the fishing industry for 1 reason, to rape the resource and make money...

plain and simple..

WP, some of us grew up fishing that river, so we kinda hold it in a special place is all...

Hahaha. Touche.

To be fair, someone alerted me to the video, as this is a river I occasionally fish for trout. So yes, I am concerned with making sure they get what's coming to them for fishing illegally, while trying to build their brand and make money off of ads too.

Too bad most fishermen don’t get out and make their own adventures, much rather sit at home and watch someone else have the fun. I don’t watch many fishing videos, except tutorials and I don’t follow them cuz I’m out there fishin.

If they’re fishing in closed waters they should get their nuts nailed to the wall.

100% in closed waters to be targeting salmon, which they make quite clear that's their intent. Couple that with continuing to not abide by the fish handling rule on WA streams(they break that one in every WA based video)...

I especially like the part where he talks about killing a coho, which isn't allowed in ANY of those rivers south of the quil....at any time of the year! Pretty sad that this is the kinda [Bleeeeep!] we have gotten used to from them.

And fuuuuuuuuauuuck the people that brought them there!

They were targeting trout so it was actually completely legal. It's not their fault there were so many pinks and WDFW didn't give them any tickets. Haters gonna hate.

there is no hatchery on that river anywhere..

There is no such thing as wild fish anymore. Their all hatchery fish bro. Probably strays from the Hoodsport hatchery.

What’s up with these Addicted dick riders coming out of the woodwork? Marlin and Co. profit off depleted fish runs, blow up local honeyholes for the world to see, yet offer NOTHING in return to offset the pressure they bring to the resource.

I'm afraid that you have it backwards bro. The Hoodsport hatchery population was derived from wild fish from the Dungeness and Dosewallips Rivers in 1953.

Any fish that is spawned in the wild is a wild fish. Native fish are wild fish that evolved in that system. We have plenty of wild fish, but few native.

At risk of completely changing the direction of this thread. I’ve always wondered and had many conversations about how many truly native fish are left in Washington. 100% in basin, native fish with zero hatchery fish DNA anywhere in their lineage. I honestly don’t think there are any unfortunately, but I do agree with your definitions of wild and native fish.

There are some native runs around. Chehalis Springers are one and some late Coho in certain streams.

Makes sense with Chehalis Springers especially. Never any hatcheries in that basin for them, correct?

Not in recent times but not sure about way back. Lots of things went on last century and example is 5 million Fall Chinook eggs transferred from old Schafer Park hatchery to upper Chehalis Hatchery and they perished when the hatchery had a problem. So this, normal timed Coho, Chum, and Fall Chinook have had stocks moved all over and it is the smaller runs like Springers and Late Coho that remained untouched. The Bingham Late Coho are not the same as the native late Coho that used to be mostly late Dec and Jan returning fish. You just about have to be an historian to track this stuff.

Tell me about it. Coming in to a lot of this knowledge over the last couple years I feel I feel in over my head. Trying to soak up as much as possible especially for the Grays Harbor region. Seems like every day I find new historical records. That said, feel free to PM me any historical papers you feel like sharing.

Also, just because hatchery fish were stocked in watershed, or strays there, does not (necessarily) mean the native genome was changed. Selection weeds out the maladapted. Except in humans, where we elect them.

I and reading about a 40 year study the Grants did on Galapagos Finches on on tiny island. Lots happened over 40 years. New species were evened, hybridization, and so on. One finding, though, was that one species present in year 40 was demonstrably different from what it was in year 0. Natural processes, including evolution, changed them.

I suspect that the only place where you might have the same native fish as you had 200 years ago is in a watershed untouched by humans or natural change in climate.

Life out there is a heck of a lot more complex and varied than we want to believe.
