I have a question about spoons, when you remove the trebble hook and place a siwash single hook on a spoon, do you face the point of the hook towards the convex side of the spoon or concave side, and what size hook corilates to what size spoon?

You want the point to face the concave side. The only reason I know is from reading Herzog's book "Spoonfishing for Steelhead". I can't explain hook size quite as easily. I personally just eyeball what looks appropriate, however his book goes into all these issues. I suggest you pick up his book and maybe he is even roaming around this board and will give a detailed response.

Most of the time the point should be ponting concave side. But not always. One exception is the popular, Blue Fox Pixie, which should be rigged - point facing convex side, a.k.a. "egg sac" side. Apparently the plastic insert produces a funky bouyancy resulting in the spoon riding concave side down the majority of the time while in the water. Positioning the siwash in the "conventional" manner will result in many more hang-ups. This isn't bull. I read this juicy tidbit from a tech report put out by Rapala/Blue Fox.

When most spoons are working properly (not spinning) they "wobble" with the convex side down. When you have the point "up" on the concave side, they hook bottom less and hook fish better.

I alway thought that hook should point up from the bottom but that is incorrect.When a spoon is working properly the concave is towards the bottom. By having the hook pointing towards the bottom or the concave side this enlarges the bite area. Which means better hookups but probably more snags.Info is from "Spoon Fishing" from Bill Herzog page 54. This a excellent book have increased catches greatly.

On most spoons for winter conditions, such as 1/2, 2/5th and 2/3rd ounce, try a 1/0 Gamakatsu siwash. For larger, such as 3/8th or 3/4 ounce, try a 2/0. The gammys will hold and steelhead this side of the Pearly Gates, I've lost too may large fish on VMC's and Mustads, they bend out.

I was wondering what are the favorite spoons of the diehard spoon steelhead fishermen? I know about the B.C. Steel that you can't get anymore and the mor-tac but there was another one that is only available in Canada, I just can't remember the brand name and the size that works best. I read about it in STS about a year ago, if anyone knows what I'm thinking of I would sure like to know.Thanks!!!

Negitive Keta,little cleo is made in U.S.A. Rhode Is. Sticking with Gibb's Coho think Bill H. pulled A big "head" out of a deep B.C. upriver slot with a 1 oz. coho that could'nt be reached by mere mortal spoon's CHROMIMX.

I have some old "otogator" spoons that grandpa left me. They look like they would be good deep fast water spoons. Has anyone used any of these?

Got a big stack of B.C. steel spoon's 1/4 oz.-2/5-1/2 all in silver-plate E-bay? Or offer? I can rig with O-ring's & hooks or ship as is.

I'm not to in to the spoon thing but do enjoy a beautiful bait of eggs and a round of golf. Shot a 82 from the tips at persimmons country club today in gresham, Or. It was just too nice of a day to not be on the course!

I went up to B.C. this summer and stoped by the fishing store picked up a bunch of blue silver kohos for 2.50 each in U.S. funds cheaper than the cleos. I also picked up some spoons made by Gibbs called an Ironhead
true silver and gold plate extra thick they get down deep also cost was 2.50 U.S.
Thanks to Bill Herzog for his STS artical a couple years ago about the Koho being a great spoon I really enjoy throwing spoons keeps me active and is great excersise.
