This is a verbatum excerpt from Pacific Seafood Company Weekly Seafood Report Jan. 14-20, 2001.
' Availibility of Wild Steelhead is very good from the Olympic Peninsula rivers. The quality is very good and the price makes it a great value. Remember you need a permit from the state to sell this fish.'

This is a weekly market report that Pacific gives to it's customers. As far as I am concerned, they are the real culprits here, they make at least $ 2.00 to $ 3.00 a pound on these fish, while the Indians make less than a dollar.
Here are some phone numbers you can call to give them your thoughts.

I do not think it would hurt to give them calls and let them know that you do not approve of them selling wild, gillnet caught steelhead.

Thanks for the numbers. I will try and give them a call. I guess, I will just tell them, as a consumer, I feel that the selling and distribution of wild steelhead is wrong, and I will boycott any retailer doing so, and convince family, friends and relatives(whoever will listen)to do the same.
Maybe if enough people call, we might effect the market slightly, or at least give the buyers a headache(that has to be worth something)---mike

Right on Fava! I wonder if it is public information to know who the businesses are that have permits to buy and sell "wild steelhead"? Anyone that cares about wild steelhead preservation should not do business with anyone connected with with distribution or sales of tribal caught steelhead.
I'm willing to compensate the tribes for not catching steelhead to increase sporting opportunity. There could be a mandatory tag you buy ($5-10) for each river where there's tribal participation (to not commercially steelhead fish). Monies collected would go to the tribe that fishes that river. The tribes could make even more money guiding steelhead trips (look at the Quinaults). I will do whatever I can (legally) to make sure the price of steelhead is as low as possible. At some price it won't be worth the tribes time. I'm just wondering what that price is? For now, reducing demand for taking wild steelhead is the name of the game!
