I haven't ever fished for springers before and I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on what kind of bait or tackle I should use. I'm useing an 8' 6" rod rated for 8-12 pound test for steelhead but am wondering if I'll need a bigger setup for Springers.

Tactics vary from place to place, so it kind of depends on where you are fishing and how. From a bank, boat, trolling or hogged up. I mainly troll with either plug cut herring or mag warts and run 20lb main line with 17lb leader.
Good luck and tight lines!

I do all of my springer fishing from the bank so I use my standard steelhead rig (8'6" Lamiglass with 12-15 lb test) with either my Curado or one of several spinning reels. The terminal end isn't fancy either. I use a 24 inch leader and a 3/0 or 4/0 VMC with the biggest gob of salmon eggs I can impail on the hook. Sometimes I'll attach a corkie or a rag but always with very little weight. The spinning reel works best when I'm using light weights. Drift this thru a deep hole and hope for the best.
But if you're in a boat pulling plugs, this set up probably isn't the best option. Good luck.

I do all my springer fishing from the bank. I fish with my steelhead rod (g-loomis light/med action) and 10lb test. If I hooked into a really big one I could be in trouble but I enjoy the challenge! Biggest one yet is 19lbs on this setup. For gear I only fish Vibrax spinners #4. Brass has been my luckiest color.

I just put on a spool of 17 lb test and drift eggs with orange yarn and a lot of weight. Can't wait until fishing this spring.

Steelheadman....What brand of 17 lb are you using? All I can find around here in 17 is Stren. Not my favorite but I like the 17lb.

I do all of my springer fishing from the boat. I use a 8'6" rod rated for 10-20# line. For line I use 20# Maxima Ultra-Green. You can't go wrong trolling plug cut herring or prawns. The key to springers is using a long leader. Where are you going to be fishing?
Good Luck!

Leadhead, I use Berkley Trilene XT. I usually use 12 or 10 lb for steelhead but in April-June, when the springers are in, I put on a spool of the 17 lb test on my Stradic.
