Our building here in Portland was shakin' pretty good. I was the first one out the door. My staff said they've never seen me move that fast.....

I heard the quake was centered in the Seattle area. Some damage is reported. Hope everyone up there is okay.

I've heard fish bite better in the rain but do they bite any better during an earthquake??

I work for Pierce County 911, we had one fun ride. We had a couple hundred calls come in for the first hour or so, Mostly Automatic Fire Alarms and Medical Aid calls. I sure hope one like this hits Seattle or we all in a world of hurt.

Felt like I was in a drift boat slamming into a huge rock. My pole didn't break. Just a few things tossed around.

Hey BuzzerBaby, Sounds like some of the same calls I received, had lots of Possible Heart calls, and a quite a few of the typical B.S. calls. All of the Fire Departments up here still have their EOC's set up. Hope you don't get to more "AFTERSHOCK" calls

Life is pretty much as proceeding at usual at the UW, ain't it Parker? We were shaking pretty good though. I was in the cafeteria and hundreds of people rushed out of the doors at once, crazinesssssss. By the way, I heard Highway 2 is closed b/c of damage so don't head up to the Sky anytime soon, OK?

I teach science in Aberdeen....what a great live demonstration!!!!! I was in the doorway of my room that goes outside so I could look simultaneously in my room and outside.

My 15 x 6 science pond was sloshing about 800 gallons of water all over the ground, trees and telephone poles were swaying and the ground was rippling.....awesome.

But most importantly, the kids reacted perfectly (duck and cover) and remained very calm throughout the ordeal. Training pays off!

Yeah, life at the UW is back to normal....or as normal as it gets around here.

Tell you what, though. My office is up on the 2nd floor of the brand new Fisheries Sciences Building and I have an excellent view of Lake Union, the I-5 and University Bridge.

Naturally, as the quake hit, I just sat in my chair and watched what was happening outside. Lake Union was tossing, the I-5 and University bridges were slightly buckling, telelphone poles were swaying and people were running out of their buildings screaming. Folks even stopped their cars on the I-5 bridge and got out and were walking around for a minute or two. In all, it was a very entertaining view!

The only damage I personally saw was when my baseball rolled off of the shelf, bounced off of the PC monitor, bounced off of my keyboard, and bounced on the ground.

W-T-F!

I work in a building down on the ship canal in Fremont and the whole place was rolling. What really got me was when the California native from the office next to mine was in his doorway looking very scared saying "This is a BIG one..."

I'm from the Midwest and have never had anything like this happen and I don't want to again. Yikes.

Sounds like the Olympia area has some bad damage. Hope there's no tsunami headed for the coast...

Does an earthquake affect the fishing? Maybe it wakes the fish up and makes them hungry and angry. Alternatively, maybe it makes them seasick and lose their appetite.

Any thoughts, experience?

Does an earthquake affect fishing? Duh!!! Of course it does!! My dog was freakin' out just before the quake hit. Animals are way more sensative to sh!t like earthquakes then us humans are. Parker and Bob were fishing the Kasilof this summer and a hot bite shut down for no apparent reason. Bob said that there must have been an earthquake close by and the fish were in "protection" mode and that is why the bite died off so fast. I'm telling this story second hand so Bob, Parker, feel free to elaborate.

Shake, rattle and roll. Glad to hear that evrybody is ok, I am still waiting to hear from my buds that were up on the Sky today. I wonder how many riprap walls fell apart on the rivers, not to mention all the hill sides that came a tumblin' down.

fishing was really affected by the quake!
i was in sultan this morning fishing the sky.
i didn't get one bite. so i went to the mickey dees in monroe to eat some lunch when all of a sudden the whole building started to shake! at that time they said it was a 6.2 centered north of olympia, well i live in tacoma, so i'am thinking if the qauke felt that strong way up in monroe it must have hit tacoma pretty hard. well after the big traffic jams i finally made it home.
my wife was already home with the kids. everybody was o.k. the house has a few cracks near the celling, but everything is fine.

Just saw three nice hatchery fish caught by my buddy and his partner today on a local river. Apparently, these fish weren't put off the bite by our most recent "geologic event". He said they were hooking fish pretty much all day and was unaware we even had a quake until he got home. He said he must have been crossing the river at the time, and just passed it off as the current, etc. Interesting topic, though.

Fish on.........

Well, Fort Lewis survived pretty much unscathed, but needless to say that being so close to the epicenter (looks like it was pretty much centered on the Nisqually delta) we got the crap shaken out of us. Lots of damage in Oly, and the store my wife works in in Lacy looks like a herd of buffalo ran thru the isles. We wuz lucky!

Finally have a slow moment as all my crews are out repairing damage to our natural gas system. Most problems in Thurston County but no major outages anywhere. I will probably be out all night as the calls are still coming in. If you smell gas call 1-888-225-5773.

Well the College of Ocean and Fisheries Libary survived "Earthquake 2001." That was where I was at...very ironic. I was reading about last night's earthquake in Wenatchee when the groud started shaking.

Mike Chamberlain got a pretty nasty burn on his back. He was at the DNR building in Olympia for the Steelhead and Cutthroat Advisory Committee meeting. While he was hunkered down, a steaming hot pot of coffee came crashig down on his back.

Earthquake? Is that what that was? Happened to be out on the south side of hat island and felt and heard a strange vibration coming thru the hull. figured it was just the current and forgot about it. Kinda felt like something had gotten stuck in the prop while going full blast but we were trolling on the kicker. Got two nice fish to boot!

My brother and I were fishing in Alaska last spring and all of a sudden the driftboat started rocking and rumbling, thought my other buddy was pulling a fast one on us, turned around and he was just standing there looking dumb-founded. We looked at the bank and it was moving up and down and the trees were swaying and making a racket like it was real windy, but it was dead calm. Funny how it transmitted right thru the water into the driftboat as if we were on land not in the middle of the river.

We too survived in Gig Harbor, and the Narrows Bridge is still standing.

After fishing the Pilchuck all bloody day without a bite I was convinced the quake had put them off the bite. Until I talked to my partner who was up at Reiter when IT hit. He witnessed a guy land six, mostly natives, to his none.

Hey Special, that was her, bro. You are right about the family of World Famouses. My mom, me, now we just need to get my dad into the mix.

As far as [Bleeeeep!] goes, I'll take her up to the Sauk Steelie Ranch and Sauk it to her anytime!!! After reviewing my initial thoughts, and having a few alcoholic bevies, I think she'd be OK if she just kept her big mouth shut! Then again, it's a lot easier to judge chicks when you don't have beer goggles on.

Over here in Gig Harbor everything is fine. I was just climbing out of the shower when it happened. Not fun! Everything is fine here, though. Just some broken glass, and a broken hot water heater hose, but that is it.

I happened to be fishing a local river at the time--trees were swayin', boat was clankin'(I though the anchor was hittin' the side of the boat--and it was all the way up.) We caught fish before the quake and after--although we did go through a dry spell after the quake of about a half hour. We now have a new name for the hole we were fishing--the earthquake hole. Wierd but beautiful day on the river.
