A NUMBER OF THE SOCKEYE IN THE COLUMBIA ARE HEADING FOR LAKE WENATCHEE. THERE USED TO BE A FISHERY FOR THEM THERE ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO AND THERE MAYBE AN OCCASSIONAL OPENING DEPENDING ON THE EXPECTED RETURN. A FEW OF THOSE SOCKEYE ARE GOING TO RED LAKE IN IDAHO. I THINK THAT THEY GOT A FEW HUNDRED FISH BACK THERE LAST YEAR, BUT BEFORE THAT THEY ONLY HAD 6 FISH MAKE IT BACK. DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER RUNS INVOLVED.

In addition to Lake Wenatchee, a substantial percentage of the sockeye run returns to the Okanogan and Osoyoos Lake. A very few generally return to Redfish Lake via the Snake and Salmon Rivers. A couple of years only one male sockeye returned there, and they would name him Lonesome Larry. More fish returned last year as a result of some of the run recovery actions taken to try and bring the population back from the brink of extinction.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.
