I'm heading out to the peninsula for a week. I want to fish the Hoh while we are there.
What fly/flies would you recommend for my seemingly futile attempt to catch a steelhead with a fly rod?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
LS

Any 2/0 or 3/0 fly will work as long as it has a rag slid down the leader and tipped with sandshrimp tail laugh Sorry, but I couldn't resist. good luck in your pursuit.

Shades of pinks, reds, orange. Ive seen some blue used this year. I dont fly fish but pay close attention to what the guys are using. You never know when your gonna find a secret color.

Well, just came back for the Hoh. I planned on only using my fly rod, and actually did it this time. I had a few on, and here's what I used. Orange Comets, Purple Perils, Bombers, and Wogs. Then a few creations of my own. The Wogs were fun, didn't have a steelie take one, but actually watched a couple follow it through the drift.

I'd agree with the pinks, oranges, etc. Slightly oversized, I used 2- 1/0 hooks. I tie my own, so some of my patterns were lightly different then some of the "normal" patterns.

Good luck, and make sure you bring your different tip lines. I forgot my sink tip/shooting heads so had to doctor my floating lines to use some of the patterns.

I like the Pink wog. They are good for salmon too.
If you have a copy of the STS look in the Jan/issue ? cover has the guide Nancy Morris from the Katmi on it. This issue has a lot of good fly patterns to try out for the Steelhead / Salmon. Egg patteren has always seem to work well too. smile

Bunny leeches are always a fave of mine (black / cerise, black purple) ... glo bugs are also quite effective, especially late season.

Here's a jumbo caught by Sal on a trip with us a few weeks back ... peach / hot pink glo-bug smile
