I am looking for a great trout rod and have been considering the Loomis 7 footers in the 4-10 lb. line rating. Does anyone own one of these rods, or have any suggestions on the best trout setup? I will be fishing mostly rivers with some lake fishing.

I would go with a lighter Loomis I have a 2wt 8 ft that was made into a spinner for trout and also a 3wt 9ft made the same way. They are real light but are excelent for trout and the 3wt is great for the little Carbon silvers...TM

I have a 4'6" trout rod it is great and I got it out of cabalas it was really cheap and its a great rod.Its one of the pro-guide rods I have a couple other trout rods but that is the best one for a good price. I am going to get a fly rod built into a spinning rod but for now I am stickin with my little 4 1/2 footer laugh

riverdog and dances,

I've built two spin rods out of fly blanks. I used the St. Croix SC IV blank in the 7'6" 3 weight. I put on the smallest reel seat I could find and custom built the handle with cork rings emphasis on small. It is the best spinning rod I have ever used. A six inch trout will rip your face off. eek

The other is a 9'0" 5 weight St Croix SC III blank with a larger handle. turned out a little heavy for lake fishing, so I use it for silvers in the salt and for spin fishing in the rivers.

Both are exellent blanks. the SC IV blank are a teal green color. when you wrap them with a metallic thread trim they look awsome.

I have the 7ft 4-8lb GL3. This is the best rod I own. It works bomb for trout. It will whip spinners and spoons a mile, plus that extra length is perfect for slack-line PowerBait bites. Also hangs for smallies, wallies, shad, silvers, pinks and summer-run steelies.

Ah, my heart starts to flutter with the mention of trout season starting again. For some reason I've never gotten in to the larger fish. Not that they aren't fun and all. I guess I just need something like instant gratification.

I haven't bought a new trout rod in about ten years, and as I am still an unemployed dot-commie it's not going to happen anytime soon. I've got an old ugly stick that has done well for me, though. Might try to put an inexpensive ultralight combo on my birthday wish list (cuatro de Mayo).

I fish a 6 ft Certified Pro (2-8#). Definitely my favorite rod I own. Great for tossing little spoons and spinners, as well as a superb grub rod for the panfish. Matched with an ultralite reel and 4# line, it's light as a feather. Makes the 7ft GL3 the Hohwaiian fishes feel like a meat stick. wink

I'll spend 200-400$ on a steelie or salmon setup but for trout i like the 20$ rod/reel combos that they have at any sporting good store. As long as they have a sensitive tip with just enough backbone, you are set. THey can handle almost anything the state buts in these lakes. 3wt fly rods are also a blast!

I too dont mind spendin a few bucks for Salmon/Steelie rods, but when it comes to trout I use the Shakesphere Intrepid 7' 4-10lb. Very durable, picks up the light bighters and my son landed a 23" brut yesterday with no problem at all. All for around 30 beans.
