OK, I'm getting ready to bust open the piggy bank and upgrade my spinning reel. I think I've decided to go for the Shimano Symetre, but can't decide whether I should get the 2000 or 4000 model. Anyone have any advice on this matter? I'll be using the reel for both winter and summer steelheading. Thanks.

I bought my Dad a symetre 2000 for fishing salmon off the beaches of Whidbey Isle. Its perfect for silvers/ humpies. I bought it after I purchased a Stradic 4000 and wished I had the 2000. The 2000 would be a great fit for float fishing. I use the Stradic 4000 for steelies all winter long with my jig rod, definately would go smaller if I had the choice again. Just my opinion after using comparable sizes.

Definitly the 2000....good reel and holds plenty of line for Steelhead.

I go against the grain on this one a bit - I like the 2000's but the 4000's just aren't that big or heavy and have much better line capacity, better drag smoothness and longevity, and puts less curls in some lines. And if you put on 15 or 20 lb. line for fall chinook fishing with it, you'll have the capacity. If you want to spend the dough I would get both sizes and fish the 2000 for summer steelhead and smaller winter streams. The Shimanos are great reels but the upcoming Okumas are definitely a reel value. smile My $0.02.

Personally I find that the 4000 is a perfect size. I use my symetry for every type of fishing. I use it for trout, steelhead, salmon, bass, etc. If I tried to do this with the 2000, I think I would end up replacing the line too often. With the 4000 it can hold enough line, to afford cutting off a long length of line without being affected. My opinion is to go with the 4000 just because it is my only reel. I really like this real and am thinking about getting another one. Just remember that your choice should be based upon your needs, and you shouldn't go wrong. Happy Hunting. smile

I have several Symetre 4000's and they are a great reel. I like the 4000 series because I can spool up with heavier line for Salmon fishing in the fall. In the summer I spool up 100 yards or so of 6# test over the heavy old line and fish for summer Steelhead. There is no need to fill the spool with 220 yards of line when you only use the last 100 yards. This saves on the pocket book. You can't go wrong with either choice.

I also like the bigger diameter of the 4000. I think light lines may come off it a little better without twisting or looping. You really can't go wrong with either setup though...
