The coho were thick off duncan rock, caught a fish every cast for an hour a couple times. They were eating krill on the surface, such a sight to see. Used a one ounce Pt. Wilson dart.

The coho were thick out at Swiftsure. We had the same fishing as Jerry. The schools would come by the boat and it was a fish a cast with a green Point Wilson dart. Lots of fun. I estimate the ratio of wild to hatchery fish was 3 to 1.

I know swiftsure is out of my reach, but where is this Duncan Rock? I'm headed up there on the 14th and 15th, (Sekiu). Andy

Its the exposed rock right to the north of tatoosh.

:p Sounds like I might be taking a trip out with my coho flies soon.

Duncan Rock looks to be about 9/10 of a mile north of Tatoosh Island. Tatoosh is the island just NW of the tip of mainland Washington State. Distance wise if your launching from Neah Bay to get to it, its about the same distance as oh say the South end of Lake Washington Coulon Boat ramp to about the 520 floating bridge by Bill Gates house in comparison. Probably a good 15 minute hop on a nice day.

I wouldn't launch from Seiku, that could be quiet the trip to Duncan rock, thats a bit further.

PS- last year the coho were sooo thick out there we didn't even travel a mile from Neah Bay after we launched to find hordes of them.

I may take the boat up there for the day. It looks like a 20 mile or so run from Sekiu, but I think that I'll trailer it up there, save about15 gallons of gas! Thanks for the info. A

WHAT WAS THE AVERAGE SIZE OF THE COHO AT NEAH BAY? A FEW YEARS AGO I FISHED NEAH BAY AND WESTPORT A COUPLE OF DAYS APART AND FOUND THAT THE COHO AT WESTPORT AVERAGED ABOUT 1 1/2 LBS MORE. I WONDER IF THAT IS THE CASE THIS YEAR. I WAS DOWN AT WESTPORT ON THURSDAY AND THE 7 COHO WE CAUGHT AVERAGED 6 LBS. ARE THE FISH AT NEAH BAY THE SAME SIZE? I'M PLANNING A TRIP TO WESTPORT FOR SUNDAY BUT WILL HEAD TO NEAH BAY FOR BIGGER FISH.

Last year early on we averaged fish in the 4-6lb range...lots of nates. Later on during the late part of July we got fish that were fat, we had some nice silvers in the 10-12lb range and a few that were hitting poundage bigger then that. Again, lots of nates all from the Neah Bay area.

The Biggest fish we caught last year were the silvers on Lake Washington and in the Snohomish river...I know KID SAUK can vouch for that! We were gettn some pretty big silvers in both locations...hope they open both this year, I'll be there.

You don't have to run all the way to Duncan Rock if you just want coho. Pick any tide rip 1-2 miles west of Neah Bay & you will have all the action you could possibly want. See my full post today about Neah Bay report. Coho are mostly pretty samll right now. Average about 4 lbs. If you go in a month they will mostly be 6-7 lbs with a better mixture of larger fish than that. Biggest coho we caught in last 3 days was probably 9 lbs, and that was a rare one that size. Believe me we C & R plenty to get good size comparisons. Natives to clipped for us about 3/4 to 1.

I spent the weekend hooking and releasing at Sekiu. Got a 12, 18 and a 30 pound chinook to go with the 13 other fish I released that were a combination of coho and chinook weighing in between 4 and 10 pounds. WooHoo!!! Spent very little time on the water overall, sometimes hooking a fish as fast as I could reset the gear.

Kings are closed as of tonight, but there are plenty of coho everywhere to be caught. My ratio of hatchery to nates was about 1 to 3. Trolling a coyote spoon a little deeper, at 50 feet on the downrigger, at 4+ mph was the key to getting the bigger fish, including nice blackmouth.

Probably still worth the drive to go out there for the rest of the month for good coho fishing. But in August, the shorter drive to Port Angeles should be hot too.

I went up to Sekiu Saturday night for a few hours of fishin'. Long drive, but it was worth it. Caught a total of 8 fish and had another 3 tip-offs of the downrigger. Best fish was a 19 lb king! Released two small kings (5lbs), and a heartbreaker, 15lbs. Caught 4 silvers, two nates, two hatchery and kept the 7 pounder. On the water at 5:00am and was done by 8:30am. I would have C&R'd more fish, but I had to get home to do some "YARDWORK". I may spend a day or two out at Neah Bay next weekend to get another shot at those kings. Fish on!!!!!!!
