The other day I was fishing on the North lewis river across from the hatchery about 1/4 mile above the snagging hole. Anyway there were several guys on the far side drifting bait. Eash one of the guys caught 8 or 9 small fish i think they were probably sea-run cutts, none of them hooked a steelhead.

Anyway here is my question. These guys were using bait and caught over a daily limit of trout, even though these fish were released shopuldn't they have stopped fishing??? It is illegal to continue fishing after releaseing a daily limit of trout caught on bait..

By the way we were there for about 4 hours and saw 3 fish hooked. 1 on a bobber and jig, one on thoes smelly jelly fake eggs and my friend hooked one on a purple spey fly fished on a 15 ft type 3 sink tip

RA3,
Those weren't cutthroat you saw those guys catching they were spring chinook jacks. The river is loaded with them right now and they are almost a neucence. So they don't really apply to the "trout" rule. There isn't even a residential trout in that river they are all hatchery smolt that are headed out to the ocean to come back in two years as our steelhead.

There are trout there I caught 1 about a 14 inch sea-run cutthroat I did catch a chinook jack about the same size also..
I didnt realize there were so many jacks in the river I just figured the one I caught was a fluke..

Now if the season is open, and the fish are large enough, what's the problem with keeping jacks?
