when does Reiter open this year? Last few years been Aug 1, but did it open earlier this year and if so, that must be good news!

As of now, Reiter is still closed until August 1. The seven people fishing there Sunday afternoon were all poaching.

thx steelflipper...thought I heard the Sky opened early (June 1?) and there was a bunch of excitement over #'s of fish and thought that included Reiter. Must have just been referring to the lower river?

Boys read your regs. The sky opened on June 1st. but Reiter is closed 1000 feet up and a 1000 feet down I believe. I fis the snoqualime and it a slective fishery right now but there a ton of people using bait.

Please read your regs.

Closed waters 1,500 feet upstream to 1,000 feet downstream of the Reiter Ponds outlet June 1 to 8:00am Aug. 1 Where's Enforcement when you need them? Signs ARE clearly posted, but can't do a thing about people who don't give a damn about regulations. Every year there seems to be more poachers. Officer Erikson, are you getting this? I talked to a Representative today and there's still no decision to open early.

Yo.

I've fished the Cable Hole twice this summer. Both times there were people fishing right at the mouth of the creek at the hatchery. Both folks seemed happy when I yelled across the creek that it was not open there. One even came over to the Cable Hole an hour later and thanked me for pointing it out to me.

The closure there seems about as clear cut as they can get in the regs, which sometimes need a lawyer to interpret.

Don't people read the regs for a river they're going to fish anymore?

Fish on...

Hi Yak Jack,

Do you by chance know a red headed kid, last name Worgum, who is a guide out of Yakutat? He's my cousin. Andy

Dogfish...don't know Andy, haven't used a guide in a couple of years and don't patronize Yakutat Lodge, pretty much base just out of Glacier Bear. Only guide I remember is Charlie, a guy who is a mechanic out of New Jersey(?) who mainly guides for griz, but drifts the river when not busy shooting.

Heres what you can do to bust those poachers out: CALL 911

The state patrol or local sheriff will be there rather shortly

That always works out good!

I can remember a few years back a trip to the cable hole from the highway side. Me and a guy I met up by the highway side were walking down towards the river when we came into the little opening at the top of the hill that overlooks the river infront of the Rearing Ponds through an opening of trees.

What we saw next was two guys drift fishing right there infront of the creek that dumps in from the rearing ponds. "hmmmm" says my partner, "its only June, what the #@!$ are those guys doing down there???" "Thats not cool at all". My partner got out his cell and called 911.

"Yes I'de like to report some poachers" my partner said to the dispatcher." "Yes I'm on a cell". "Yeah were up just east of Goldbar across the river from the Reiter Rearing ponds and their are two guys are fishing there". "One is wearing camoflauge army pants, and the other has a white tank top on." He said they'd have the authorities out shortly.

My partner said "Why don't we stay outta the mix and hang out up here where we can see whats going on more easily, just in case". I said "alright".

Not long after that the two poachers stopped fishing and headed towards the intake. They sat down on the intake wall looking down into the creek. One had carried the gear up and leaned it against the railing and the other guy with the camoflauge army pants looked like he lugged a duffle sack up there.

Next what happened shocked the crap outta me. One guy opens up the duffle bag and holds it open while the other guys scoops up steelies with his net as he runs up and down the creek and tosses them in the bag. "Holy crap" I said. My new partner was already on the cell again talkn to the dispatcher giving them more information.

He said "The dispatcher said they are here". I said "where I don't see the cops" He said " Look over there by the fish ponds, that shack, theres a stater parked there, and another ones in the parking lot I can see through the trees....just pulling in".

"looks like some @$@# is about to hit the fan for them guys" I said. Just then I noticed the two guys had stopped what they were doing and were sitting on the wall again. The guy with the white tank top pulled out something from his fishing vest laying on the ground. I said to my partner "Oh no, look, I hope thats not what I think it is", My partner said "whats that?" I said "A Gun!!!", "Maybe they know the cops are here, and maybe we better clear the area before something big happens".

Next thing I saw was the guy was holding the object he had gotten out of his vest up to his face. Puff, Puff went little white clouds of smoke. IT was a bong! They were firing up a bowl! Not only were they poaching, but they smoking some reefer! "HA! what a bunch of Dumb@$$es" my partner said. We laughed as he passed his bong to his buddy to take a hit. Just then the cops sprinted out of the bushes and nabbed them!

BUSTED!!! LOL

Now we never heard what happened to those two guys, but I can bet it wasn't funny after they got done doing some time over a few fish in a bag and some reefer. Getting their cars out of impoundment. Getting their fishing gear back from the district judge. Doing some community services. Losing their jobs because they're in jail. And trying to explain to the wife just what the Heck they were thinking when they got busted!

So my point is: Stay the @#$! outta Reiter ponds unless your aloud to be there! Cuz If I'm around your gettn a big ticket!

Andy:

Yep, David Worghum is an old acquaintenance. I sold him a flat-bottom Alumaweld a few years ago, and I believe that his uncle is still using it for guiding on the Situk. Many nice days on his Luhrs pulling in the halibut.

8Ft Ldr,

Good story-justice is served,eh. I will carry my cell if I am fishing the up or down from there, for that reason. It takes the inbreds like that to get all access closed.

Personally, I wouldn't advise calling 911 unless it's an emergency. I'm all for nabbing pochers, but let's keep the 911 lines open for someone who truly needs the help.

8ft,

The guys you saw at Reiter were probably smokin' crack not reefer. After all, you'd have to be a crack smoker to be as brain-dead as the two guys you described.

The Seattle Times reported in todays paper that with the Nooks open on the Sky from the Wallace down, Reiter will open Sunday @ 8am. Has anyone been able to confirm this?
