My brother-in law is headed to Homer for halibut and kings, anyone have current info?

If he's thinking about kings in the spit lagoon, then he's a little late. Pinks ought to be showing there soon, and silvers into August. Halibut should still be kickin' as long as the weather cooperates. The Alaska dept. of fish and game website has somewhat updated reports for the Homer area, you might check there. http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/FISH.GAME/sportf/sf_home.htm [ 07-23-2001: Message edited by: 4Salt ]

Hey, I deckhand on a halibut charter boat in Homer, our boats just do half-day charters, so you probably wouldn't be interested unless toting along kids or others who aren't interested in spending the whole day fishing. Anyways, for King and silver salmon trolling, I'd recomend Daniel's personalized guide service, at 1-800-230-3843. He's recognized by most in the harbor as the best saltwater salmon fisherman in town. For halibut, Sea Flight fishing sport fishing charters is a good boat, as well as most any of the Silver Fox boats. If you go with Silver Fox, the "Brazen" is probably the best boat in their fleet, and I believe is leading the Homer Jackpot halibut derby with a 322lb fish. The number for the Sea Flight is 907-235-7572. Silver Fox charters has a website at www.silverfoxcharters.com All these boats only take six people, and fill up fast, so I don't know how you'd do on last minute reservations. If you're interested in any half-day halibut fishing or sightseeing, the number for my office is 907 235-7272, I work on the M/V Jackpot. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions, or for the names of more boats if none of those work out. Fishing's been pretty good lately, wide open halibut 30 to 40 lbs, and bigger ones if the weathers permits you to go out far enough. If you go, take along a light spinning or casting rod with some spinners or jigs, there's been lots of Silver salmon hanging out on the fishing grounds, but most halibut boats don't provide the tackle to catch them with. My e-mail's dib82@hotmail.com good luck

Yeah, no kidding on bringing some light tackle for the ocean salmon. As we were fishing away with our huge halibut gear, I saw huge schools of pinks and silvers that passed within 10' of the boat! I'm sure I could have easily pitched out something (buzzbombs, spoons, spinners, jigs, cut-plug herring) and hooked fish! Massive schools of fish, easily within casting distance!
That ain't no joke
