So I promised my nephews, two 10 yr. olds, to take them fishing. The only requirement was their dad had to pick up a salmon punch card for each of them.
Would you believe they had to provide a SSN in order to get them cause they might be a dead beat dad... HELLO!
............................................
Anyone got any ideas on who I contact to complain about a lack of common sense?

I have taken my son (12yrs) and his friends fishing many times. I have never been asked to give a SSN for the kids.I just take them in and they give all there info and get a punch card. I had to give mine when I got my licence.

With the new licenses everybody has to give an SSN. Kids and all. I think its just another way to track what you do. Everything you do these days requires an SSN. I thought SSN's were for social security purposes?

I called and inquired about this SSN stuff and was told hopefully with in the next few years all states would require this and be linked togather, so an individule can not by resident lic in more then one state and that a dead beat dad will not be able to purchase a fish or hunt Lic. But really if you follow the rules and own up to your responsibilities you will have no problems....

Evereyday I sell more licenses then I would like and issue punch cards to kids as well. Anyone under 15 that is just having a punchard issued to them does not need to provide a SSN number.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Jeff Koenings, the head of WDFW, had a letter to the editor in the Olympian explaining the policy. He stated that it is Federal law to record the SSN of ANY license applicant, including Fish and Game Licenses. The idea behind it is to deny licenses to deadbeat parents.

My only question is: If the person in question is ALREADY violating a court order to pay child support, what makes them think they'll suddenly become law-abiding citizens when it comes to getting a license?

I give a false SSN for the simple fact that only the US government needs that #..Seems to me things have got way out of hand..That is the down fall of this country is a persons SSN..I don't feel I need the state of Washington keeping tracked of me.SSN was made for tax perposes not to keep track of people and what they do...Don't get me wrong I dont believe in DEADBEAT dads but to us honest folks I want my SSN kept private..When this country starts to know your every move whats that called???Socialist!!!!Its kinda like gun control...Only the honest will give up there guns!!!just like the SSN why would a DEADBEAT give his SSN up...He would fish illegaly first!!!I sayn lets leave the honest alone and spend some of these tax dollars going after the dis-honest..Instead of trying to do it the lazy way..TM

The SSN according to law is supposed to be only used for SS purposes.
Been in the military? Been to college??

It used to be very important to keep it private. Now if someone wants it they can get it.

As far as this person requiring these kids to have it, it's just another underpaid retail clerk who doesn't know their job real well. Not surprising.
I had a friend one time that couldn't buy .22 bullets at Fred Meyer because he was 20 and you have to be 21 to buy pistol ammo. The dumb woman behind the counter insisted that they were pistol ammo. Go figure that one out. rolleyes I guess they could be, but 90% od .22 bullets go into rifles, actually more like 99% probly.
He argued and argued and finally gave up. Drove down the street and bought them.

Thanks for all your input...all good points.
Some after thoughts and I'll let it go: 1) These boys were not purchasing a Lic. just getting punch cards 2) When was the last time you heard of a 10 yr old fathering a child? 3) Has anyone ever seen or heard of a "Deadbeat Dad" disquised as a 10 yr old?
-----------------------------------------><>
A PROPOSAL...
We find someone within our ranks that has a way with words and is willing to give up some fishing to be a politician. (Yes, I know this is not a popular idea, the seasons are already too short.)
To insure we've got the right person the qualificatiions should be a little different.
1) This person should know how to tie an egg loop.
2) Be able to identify different species of fish.
3) Have the ability to read the river.

(...I'm you could add more to that list)
------------------------------------------
I'm convinced, the only ones with any "common sense" are out fishing!

Well...
I personally hate the idea of the government contolling me. Like already posted it is not going to keep the unhonest people honest. It's just going to affect us honest people. Are we truly getting closer to 666? What's next...need a bar code in our hand or tatoo to fish?!? I'm almost tempted to turn on the government. It's just frustrating that so much personal information has to be released. There must be a way to solve this problem Ahh, communism, that's it. Good choice, NOT! I agree that we need to come together and find a solution. Let's just make sure we don't make matters worse.

I don't mean to get off task here guys but it's obvious that some of you are not child support paying dads like me. Thanks Dan S. for applying the term "deadbeat parents" instead of "deadbeat dads". Statistically, mothers required to pay child support are less likely to pay than fathers. That being said, the sad truth is that in the vast majority of cases the children are awarded to the mother in child custody cases. You can forget about a fair shot here, all of us know that.

Please realize that the child support system is not just about helping custodial parents and children, it's big business. Millions of dollars are raised through this system from matching funding sources including Federal. I am required to mail my child support to the State of Oregon. The State then receives a percent of Federal dollars as a match. This system of course raises millions in Federal match and employs alot of folks, thus the interest in making sure the money keeps coming.

I believe a much higher perecentage of non-custodial parents would be in compliance if the system were more fair. In my case, I have joint custody with my ex, she has them 4 days a month more than I. Despite this and a modest income, I am forced to give my ex 850 dollars a month! I still pay half of all medical, dental, and unreimbursed costs and of course all their expenses while they are with me. Now if that is not enough, at the end of the year, she gets to claim both children (Federal Loop) as dependants because she has them more than I which pulls her in an additional 3k per year! This is of course after I paid taxes on that money. I am totally current on all of my child support obligations and will continue to do so but find it no surprise that there are "deadbeat parents". I am fortunate, many are not so lucky. It must be overwhelming to many "deadbeat parents" to have a judge take their home, most of the time with their children, and then require them to pay half of their monthly income. Would you still pay? It's damn tough to live on nothing.

Think about it this way, a Social Security Number (SSN) is just like a "tattoo". It stays with you for your life! Don't they also "tattoo" dogs and horses for quick identification? Remember, not that long ago, a man named Hitler, also "tattooed" millions of people so that he could quickly identify and keep track of them. Are we headed that way now, only history will know! But also remember this, history always repeats itself!

Just because we don't like giving our SSN out for a fishing liecence that means we don't want our government to defend us rolleyes .I bet if it ment food for you ,you would be one of the ones to take 666 the mark of the beast on your forehead and burn in hell eternally aye!!!

It doesnt matter to some folks they want the government to take care of them even if it means loosing there freedom.Right bank walker??

Less fishing time to be a politician...hmmm, I'm already tempted wink

It's not like they really do anything anyways rolleyes I just want to get into it all just so I can start calling bull**** when I see it. Of course, they'll probably doctor some photos of me doing some "act" where I'll have to remain silent. Not saying that there's any photos of me doing any kind of "acts" wink So if any materialize, just disregard them as false...

You guys won't have to worry about getting tattooed or giving your SSN and having gov't find you. Nope. Instead, you'll just have a microchip implanted into you...mark my words.

Personally, this is my suggestion on the whole SSN issue for licenses. Why can't they just take a thumb print? Afterall, a finger print is your basic step in junior detectives. A lot of banks require you to imprint or scan your thumb on checks. Why can't they scan your thumb and put it into a database? It would eliminate the scare of the loss of identity that arises with the current policy.
