I was planning a trip to the Vedder River in BC in early Sept. and I was wondering if anyone has fished it before. I fly fish so things like which flies work, and where the good drifts are would be helpful. I will probably try for either coho, chums, or pinks. Any info would be helpful.

Mid to late Sept. you can catch white kings[springer eh] on flies off a strike indicator, bloodsucking leeches work ok.

Stevenbhow:

I usually find myself on the Vedder at least 20-30 trips a year. There's not going to be a whole lot going on in that river in early September. The red kings are black boots by then, however there is a strong pink run in early to mid september that is just huge, all C&R on the pinks though. The coho start showing in strong numbers around the third week of September (native release). The stinky whites usually peak around the first two weeks of October. The chums are in thick during early November.

Jerry Garcia: Didn't know you fished the Vedder to. Guess we'll have to rendezvous for a fall trip up there.

Good luck

I get up to the Vedder every year in mid to late Oct. There is easy access almost every inch of it from the road. Pinks are always c/r but they are great fun on a flyrod. God help you though if you get one of those big Kings or Chum on while fly fishing! I did and it completly cleaned my reel in about 6 sec. Check out www.sportfishingbc.com, everything you'll need to know will be available there. Try to go during the week, when the fish are in it's real combat fishing and try not to pay any attention to the snaggers, they are out in full force too! mad

I am also planning a trip to the vedder for those big white chinook. I have herd these fish average around 25-30lb. This is pretty hard to believe. How many people out there have tangled with these bad boys of the vedder.

That's right Northriver, they do run that big and bigger. I would recommend c&r on them though, they don't cook up as good as a regular King, at least none I've tasted were worth the cookin'. You'll want to take some stout gear, 15 to 20lb test line minimum and a good heavy drift rod too. These bad boys will wear you out! You can check out the web site in my last post and keep up on when the fish are really in by watching the BB for the local guy's reports.
