If you just got to go out in the big seas and swells, it is time to stop being macho and get
those life jackets on. Those who survived yesterday had life jackets on.
Anybody know where you can buy a size larger than X-large? With a Phone number.....in Wash or Oregon?

Do you fit a life jacket over your coat and raingear? Or do you put your raingear over your life jacket? It seems that you would want to have the life jacket over the top, but then if you do hit the water you'd be pretty heavy with a coat and raingear on. What do you think?

My opinion is life jacket under the other stuff. Maybe the CG has more accurate guidance though. Here is why I'd put the PFD under the raingear:

1. you can layer your raingear as the conditions change without having to doff the PFD
2. you can ditch the raingear if you end up taking a swim
3. the PFD should be a snug fit, which will be clammy and uncomfortable if you have a PVC or even goretex raincoat under it

Reading about those poor souls gave me the creeps. 20' boats vs. 10' waves. Aiyeeee!!!!

Regards.

I was fishing on the north jetty yesterday when those boats went down.It was the roughest I've ever seen it during the summer.
Somebody mentioned 10 ft. waves.I think they were a lot worse than that.
I never saw a boat even attempt to cross the bar till 10 o clock. Then there were very few.
No disrespect intended for those poor folks that lost their lives yesterday but as important as a lifejacket is,common sense is a greater lifesaver. Nobody should have even attempted to make that crossing.Even the commercial guys never attempted it till later in the day.(not charters)And they live on the river and ocean a huge part of their lives.
Everybody needs to keep one thought in mind. There is not a fish in this world that is worth dying for. Please use common sense. And wear your life gear.

Life jackets on the outside always.
Isn't the typical orange jacket meant to keep you on your back and your head above water. If you put clothing over it, it probably
wouldn't work that way.
Thanks for the Cabella info...Got to watch
Cabellas on the shipping...they charge for oversized boxes that are not oversized. I know shipping!
But then the ocean isn't a friend...It might be interesting to hear a story or two of some close calls that are close to home.

Just heard that another guy is no longer because of a shark attack.... laugh

A lot of anglers don't want to wear life jackets because they are too bulky...or just because it's a macho thing. Check out www.mustangsurvival.com
Mustang Survival makes a life jacket called the air force which is a fanny pack. It just fits around your waist. If you fall in, pull the inflater and instant life jacket.
A life saver and you can still look cool (well, some of us anyway).
