Steve Salveson ('fishbait') and I had the pleasure of fishing with Keith (stlhdr1) most of the day on the NF Lewis. As many of you know, he and his partner James (Perfect Drift) are specialists on this river, and they know their sheeyat! But with a little dial-in help from Keith, Steve and I were able to hang in there with him with our eggs and scents. Steve and I hooked 8 salmon apiece and Keith hooked 10, and a couple of jacks. We only landed about half of the fish we hooked. However, Steve landed the biggest fish hooked of the day; about a 30 lb. bright hen. Then James came out with us for the last hour and a half or so and hooked 3 and landed 2 (he may have snagged a 4th one briefly?), while we also contined to hook fish; making it a 29 fish on day (mostly silvers but a few chinook too). ...
Keith is right about an abundance of fish to be caught in this river - soon to be joined in that realm by several other rivers. As for the Keith controversy thread, I will tell you he is a really good guy that is fun to fish with! And very open and helpful about NF intracices. Thanks much Keith. - Great fun!

RT, Fishbait (steve and steve), I wanted to say that I had a ton of fun fishing with you guys even though you are from OR. You two both have a handle on things and picked up the WA methods of big river fishing quickly. You both are welcome to come up anytime and fish with me. It is true that some Oregon fisherman do where pink panties, we had a chance to see them at the end of the eve when RT had a 2 lb silver hen that he wanted netted, no one was interested in grabbing the net and helping so RT, confused because he knows there are eggs in this fishes belly dives to the net and puts the fish in the boat. Afterwards was when RT yanked Fishbaits shorts down and exposed the panties, a sort of thank you for the help from fishbait with the net. All in all, I had a great day fishing with some fun, fun guys. You oregon boys don't whine as much as I expected. Keith [ 09-14-2001: Message edited by: stlhdr1 ]

That was fun Keith. I have known Steve for about a year, from ifish events and the same Assoc. of NW Steelheaders TV chapter. He's a fun guy, but after he dropped an egg cluster down my plumbers butt when I was bent over I got him back when he was turned the other way - right in the Meathole (the river) in front of onlookers, I yanked down his Rebok shorts to his ankles faster than a 'ho can steal your bait! Yikes - he's got on skin colored speedo style underwear! Don't quite know what to make of that. Keith, check your e-mail for a source of goodies I came up with. RT

GREAT FUN............. Fishing with Keith and RT........ Proud to say that I held my own for most of the day.... Mid day when the fish lock up, Keith still managed to scrape out a few and pull out ahead. I was also somewhat humbled by a fisherman 20 years younger than myself (doesn't happen often), I rationalized it by the fact that it was his home river and I was fishing behind him most of the time. Fact is Keith is a damm good fisherman, and I mean top one half of the top one percent. Speaking of good fisherman, this was my first time fishing with RT. His skill with a wide variety of lures/baits impressed me as did just having a conversation with him. The man is very knowledgeable. Nice to be back on this river after a 15 year absense.... I uploaded a picture of Keith holding an old spawner. Could not figure out how to get it to show here, can someone help. Its in the Salmon section and is called called Keith. Thanks for a fun day Keith and save a few days to come down and get in my boat this fall in Tillamook tidewater. This will be my 24th year and you can fish behind me. No just kidding, I will give you first cast in every hole. We will catch some big fall pigs, should be quite a few 50+ fish this year, leave the 12 lb at home and go get some 50 lb big game to go with the 80 lb tuff, oh, and bring some 6/0's

Fishbait, I'm superexcited to come down and put it on the fall fish in tillamook, I've got a couple of poolsticks ready that could lift the back of a dump truck if I need them. But running 80 main and 50 leader, Yikes... Are you sure these are salmon and not shamoo's! I'll be ready to come down and get in on the excitement. Perhaps we can drag james out for more than a 1/2 an hour though. He's real excited about that area also. Keith

Ya Know, I wanted to come back and revisit my earlier post about Keith's fishing ability... and comment on RT comment that he should not brag on his posts (made verbally when we were fishing on thurs)......I don't want anyboddy to get the wrong idea.... He is not great......He is not super smart...... He is not lucky...... He is not special.... What he is: he is a angler that works very hard ( we spent 12.5 hours on the water) that pays attention to his bait (changes it often... example... I was fishing a bait... i wont tell you what.. middle of the afternoon... granted it did not look perfect, but it was the middle of the afternoon. Keith gave me grief for it, I fished it, at 47 I'm entitled to be a little lazey, I've caught more chinook than Keith ever dreamed of) but his comment, it's not right, I would not fish it..... lesson here is ....... time on water + doing the little things exceptionally right + paying attention to detail + fishing hard and smart+ ability to fish 12 hours (youth has its advantages) = HIGH LINER or for those of you who dont understan the lingo...constintantly hooks or catches 20 - 30 fish every trip............. fact of the matter is...HE paid/pays the price to be good so before you swear at him or call him a game hog or call him lucky ask yourself this question........Have you worked as hard as he has to catch fish. OPR mabye he is just fishing in the shadow or his fiend James.............and takes passed off roda all the time...........had to leave on a contriversal note ( god I wish I could ssspess as well as I fihs)...............Fishbait
