Here's something for the bass fishermen in the crowd. Lately, I've been catching the peewadding out of silvers fishing a jerkbait in the kelp just like I would for bass. What I've been doing is heading out close to dead low tide, finding a hole in the kelp and then throwing a jerkbait on a bass rod. I've been using one of the Bomber 15A baits and catching fish. It's not a matter of how so much as it is one of just finding the fish. At the same time, I've been catching the fish on flies as they are feeding heavily on candlefish. Fly fishermen in this area turned me onto this... they were catching the silvers on bass poppers. This fishery takes place in water less than 10 feet deep and close to where you find shore fishermen working. In all my life, I've never seen anything like it. Not only are the strikes really vicious, but fish are very aggressive. They will follow the lure all the way to the boat and fight each other for a chance to smack it.
Now, I haven't been out for a week, so I can't say it's working still around here, but my bet is that if you find silvers, they'll bite. If the chinook concentrate near Hoodsport, I'll be trying it down there. I'll also be using it somewhere near here later in the week when I get caught up on work. If you have any questions, just ask. However, if you fish jerkbaits for bass at all, you'll know almost everything you need.
