Im off to Kodiak Isl in the morning for some Steelhead, Sockey, Char and Monster Silver action for 8 days.

Ill be on a zipperlip river in a isolated fly in by Helo camp catching hundreds of wild fish. My cousin who is a guide in this camp reported to me that the fish runs are the best he has seen in 11 years for this time of the year. Lots of steelies between 8 and 12#. And hords of silvers between 16 and 24#. Not to mention the river is full of fresh Sockey op to 12# and Dollys up to 7# from bank to bank. He said the Sockey and dollys are being a nuisence, as you cant keep them off of your hook.

He said that there are so many fish that when you wade into the river and have taken your spot the fish are stacking in break water made by you. Ultimately using you as a rock to rest behind.

I will post some photos and reports when I get back.

I'm looking forward to seeing picts of the 12 lb. sockeye. They were huge in Bristol Bay this year and I DIDN'T take any pictures!!! Have fun, this is a great time of year in Kodiak....first year I won't be up t here getting ready for the King Crab season in a long time. I usually go a week early and fish the rivers just outside of town, catch tons of fish on the fly, live aboard the boat, and have all the amenities of town at hand. Have a GReat trip!!!

Well here is what Kodiak is like,

Steelhead was slow due to the lack of water but still much better than any places down here. I wont say how many I got but I had some of my best steelhead fishing ever and it was all on a fly. The steelies arnt big there from 3 to 8 pounds avarage but my largest was a 33" hen of about 11#.

Thousands of Dollies. I couldnt even begin to gues on how many I caught everyday but I got lots in the 3 to 5 pound rang and the biggest was 28in. They were so thick in the side chanels and flats they looked like school of chum at hoodsport.

I caught so many sockey my arm still hurts I hooked well over 50 a day on the days they came through my section of river.

The silvers were huge! So big I never landed one but hooked some over 20#. Some guys I was with caught some really big silvers nothing smaller than 10#.

I fished with the biggest bears I have ever seen.

The only bad thing about my trip was that all my film was ruined. Due to the higher security levels at the airport they are using the exray machines at a stronger levlel and when they exrayed my bag it over exposed all my film. I found this out today when I went to pick up my pictures. I only managed to get two steelie pictures and one very faded and blurey picture of my 8# dollie. All of my bear pictures were ruined as well as most all my steely and sockey pictures.

Sorry to hear about the film...its an awful feeling when you are so excited to see pictures of great moments and they do not turn out!!

Glad to hear you had fun though...

How'd the waders hold up? smile

Hey Rich, can you send me some information on where you went on Kodiak and who to contact for next year trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.
