I am starting to make my own jigs. Could you guys recommend some hooks I should try? I will be fishing 3/8 and 1/4 heads on 1 and 2/0 for Salmon and Steelhead. Heard great things about Gamakatsu but are there any comperable without spending a fortune? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I'm a big fan of jig hooks that can be sharpened. Jigs get beat up a lot, and all it takes is a hookset, rock, or tree to dull your hook. I'd rather be able to sharpen my hook by hand then have to toss it.

Maybe the fine people over at www.silentapproach.com will tell us what hooks they use on their quality jigs? That's the hook I'd go for, if I were to make some jigs.

I'm rather partial to "Create A Lure" jigheads because they won't rust...which is an issue when fishing marabou jigs for winter runs...$2.50 or so for 10.

The best idea is to use the best hook you can get and for my money, that's gammy's. I do a lot of jig fishing for steelhead and tie my own jigs. If your setting the depth for your drift right, you won't loose many jigs, except to a fish now and then. I went on a jig tying frenzy a couple of years back, and still have most of them. Everyone has their own favorite way of fishing but, after switching over to floats and jigs, I've caught more steelhead than ever! smile

I've landed some brutes on the jigheads I've bought from Rainbow Jigs . Check out his pics page, that's my darkish Sol Duc nate on one of his jigheads. And no, I'm not bashing anyone else's business. Just my .02.

I like Eagle Claw 630. I believe Jig Doctor and Rainbow Jigs use these as well. I like a #2 with 1/8th heads.

There are a lot of good jig hooks that are strong enough for salmon & steelhead including the ones mentioned above. A lot of it comes down to personal preference. Over the years I've had the best success with Gamakatsu and Owner jig hooks.
