Okay, I setup my home web server last night. @Home limits my upload speeds horribly so it might be a bit slow if traffic goes up but check this video out. Three sturgeon around 9' each.

The clip's still kind of rough but enjoy anyway.

The problem you will have is that your IP address changes every few days.
Most cable contracts also state that if you're hosting a site on their cable network that they can pull the plug on your service.

This is the reason they limit your upload speed to 128.

Actually my IP has been the same since I got cable over a year ago. They have you do DHCP just in case they ever change it, but if they do then it's just a quick change with dyndns.org and I'm back up and running.

As for the server thing, I have it from a good source that they don't really care about the server thing as the cap generally discourages server admins. If I get serious about hosting sheet then I'll probably just move everything to Hypermart.

Quick fix for the DHCP problem. Buy a $49 dollar SMC or similar router that does DHCP on the ISP Ethernet port and NAT (network address translation) on the Inside Ethernet port. This allows you to have as many machines on the inside as you want (up to 64,000) that will all take on the same IP address that your ISP gave you via DHCP. Each machine on the inside uses the same IP address and just increments the TCP or UDP port number associated with the IP Connection and keeps track of them in a table on the router. It does not matter if ISP changes the DHCP assigned address, the router handles it. I got mine at Egghead before they went out of business for $99.00 with a $50.00 rebate. This router (SMC7004BR) also has a built in Firewall and basically configures itself. Happy Surfin'

Before I setup the server I had a Linux router/firewall on the front end connected to one of my two 10bit 16-port routers that I got for free at my previous employer (like I needed 32 connections, but they were free so...). I couldn't get my firewall to port forward for me straight away so I worked around it last night by installing a software firewall straight to the cable modem.

I'm just running one PC on this end now, and since it's running DHCP already if I lose my DNS connection I can always ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. Still would have to update dyndns.org for the forwarding. Not ready to commit to a real domain yet...

Of course, as soon as I get my server up my cable internet connection goes down. It has nothing to do with my (brief) serving of the sturgeon file and hopefully it will be up again in a day or so *sigh*.

In the meantime I'm looking for a free server provider that will allow me to upload my 875k .wmv file. Proving to be more difficult than I would have imagined, but I'm working on it. If you'd like the file emailed to you just post here and I'll send it off.

Homestead isn't doing any free sites right now. frown

I'm playing with Tripod right now. Should have it up and going in a couple hours.

For the time being the link to the sturgeon video is at Tripod , but to be honest I don't know how long it will last. Right click on the link on that page and choose "Save Target As", as it didn't seem to be automatically downloading for me. Just make sure that the extension is .wmv.

I tried to edit the page and they already say that they've closed my account but the page seems to be there after a refresh. I emailed them asking what the problem was and have yet to receive an answer.

Oh, and I also tried Homestead. Not only do they not like the upload of .wmv files but they also do not like .png files, which are nothing more than image files. Damned software pirates make it tough for us legitimate folks to setup a free webpage...

Of course, thanks to the wonders of censorship you will notice that there are stars in the URL name. Please replace the stars with b-astard without the '-'.

I've got a mirror of the website that seems to download better
at Brinkster . Of course, replace the stars with the vulgar word as listed above. Hopefully with two mirrors it'll stay up.

I think things are finalized now. Use this link to see the video. Of course make sure and follow the instructions in my signature regarding those pesky *******'s in the URL.

There's a Quicktime version of the video up there for you Mac addicts, which is actually a bit different than the wmv one in that I moved the video segments around to show more of the fish and less of the fight. I'll re-record the wmv version tonight to the same video. Just looks better.

If you can't get it to work or if Tripod starts freaking out just let me know and I'll try something else. I'll also be emailing Bob to see if we can get that horrible 'b' word removed from the pottymouth list.
